Of all the clothing brands in the world, footwear or otherwise, Converse has to have some of the most timeless designs ever created. Once donned by the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Erving, Converse’s flagship Chuck Taylor All Stars and Pro Leathers may have lost their utility on the basketball court, but not in the fashion world.
Today, Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free’s artist-friendly multi-disciplinary brand pgLang (an abbreviation of Programming Language) has released two new shoes in collaboration with Converse. The project, called pgLang for Converse, which first began the design phase over two years ago, was the first non-music assignment for the company following its launch in 2020. The line consists of a newly designed version of both Converse’s Chuck 70 and Pro Leather sneakers, each coming in white with pgLang’s logo somewhere on the uppers.
For the Chuck Taylors, the silhouette has hardly changed at all since the shoe’s debut in 1922, and the same goes for the Pro Leathers since 1976. Where most collaborators try something innovative or loud with the age-old designs, pgLang and its team of creatives have opted for something minimalist. The new Chuck 70, dubbed thegoodluckchuck, sports the traditional silhouette, but with red and blue trim along the rubber sole and a gold star embossed on the All-Star patch. The Pro Leather, dubbed theprogramleather, features an off-white star and chevron patched on the upper, as well as an off-white rubber sole.
The shoes were supposed to come out late last year but got delayed a few months due to supply chain issues. However, both are finally available for purchase now at either Converse or pgLang’s online store.
