Launched in 1997, the X-Metal series is evident of how dedicated Oakley’s always been to pushing design technology and aesthetics to the absolute limit. Born from founder Jim Jannard’s desire to create the world’s first sculpted titanium eyewear, the X-Metal was also very much ahead of its time, predating the titanium gear boom by almost a couple of decades.
The fourth in the series, the X-Metal Juliet came out in 1999 and quickly became its most popular for how it combines lightweight precision with futuristic styling. This notoriety pushed even further after it was featured in the X-Men film in 2000, worn by James Marsden’s Cyclops. Now, Oakley is bringing back the Juliet after being urged to do so by its Chief Visionary Travis Scott, who just came on board earlier this year.

The MUZM Treatment
Starting in 2021, the archival-focused MUZM line has been dedicated to pulling the most influential silhouettes from the vault and rebuilding them with modern lens technology while respecting their original ethos. Previous drops included the Eyeshade from 1984 and the Sub Zero from 1992, but the Juliet stands apart as the collector’s grail among them all.
This particular release under Travis Scott’s auspices addresses the Juliet’s cult status head-on. The frame still uses the same 25-piece liquid-titanium X-Metal construction that made the original so special, with an adjustable frame, temple shocks, and those swappable nosebombs that allowed for a custom fit. Oakley’s manufacturing process remains equally extreme, with titanium alloy that gets forged under intense heat using a six-ton generator producing 425,000 watts.
The new Juliets feature Oakley’s Plutonite Prizm Polar lenses shaped to preserve XYZ Optics geometry, which brings contemporary visual clarity to a frame that predates most of today’s lens innovations by decades.
First Serialized Oakley
Most evident of Scott’s influence, the MUZM Juliets are the first serialized Oakleys in the company’s history. Each pair comes individually numbered on the earstem, a move that transforms these from performance eyewear into actual collectibles. The standard MUZM edition comes in Prizm Ruby Polar and will see a limited raffle-based release at Oakley’s Shibuya store on November 22. Meanwhile, two Cactus Jack-specific editions in Prizm Violet Polar and Prizm Snow Black are being reserved exclusively for friends and family.
Each pair ships with a custom Pelican hard case and an individually serialized collector’s coin, because if you’re going to do a hyper-limited drop, you might as well commit to the whole package.
