VanMoof Rolls Out a Pair of Ultra-High-Tech, Urban-Focused Pedal-Assist eBikes

VanMoof is an Amsterdam-based eBike outfit that since 2009 has been on a mission to revolutionize the world of urban mobility. And while the Dutch outfit already produces several power-assisted two-wheelers, the company has now unveiled what’s undoubtedly its most advanced release to date with the completely redesigned A5 and S5 eBikes.

Developed over the course of nine years by 165 designers and engineers and boasting more than 320 custom-designed parts, the S5 and A5 both feature all-new frame designs, along with a dozen industry firsts. Weighing 50.7lbs, the S5 sports a straight frame and full-size wheels while the 48.5-lbs A5 is equipped with a step-in frame and smaller rims. Winner of a prestigious Red Dot Design award, both models feature a swapable battery that affords around 90 miles of autonomy on a single charge (in economy mode) or roughly 35 miles on full power mode. The S5 and A5 also feature VanMoof’s WARP SPEED drivetrain that offers a 20-mph top speed and packs a Turbo Boost button that instantly delivers the eBike’s full 50ft-lbs of torque.

VanMoof has also used the new A5 and S5 to debut its new proprietary Halo Ring interface — an intuitive handlebar-integrated LED lighting system that shows information like acceleration and battery life. Other high-tech updates and features include an integrated keyless kick-lock with automatic unlocking, top-tube frame-integrated 270° visible LED head and taillights, a suite of built-in antitheft tech including integrated sensors and alarms, GPS tracking and remote lockdown capabilities, and a new handlebar mount with connectivity to a dedicated app that allows the user’s smartphone to act as the bikes’ display.

The VanMoof A5 and S5 pedal-assisted electric bicycles have both been priced at $2,998. And while the two new models have yet to be released, interested parties can join a waiting list on the company’s website. VanMoof will also be offering an array of optional accessories for the bikes including a click-on battery and a front luggage rack.
