Few cars in the Japanese tuner world carry the weight of the AE86. Toyota built the Corolla Levin from 1983 to 1987 as an entry-level RWD sports coupe, and it immediately found its way into motorsport. TOM’S Racing ran Levins in the inaugural 1985 All Japan Touring Car Championship season, pulling off a class sweep and an overall win in soaking-wet conditions at West Sendai Highlands. Then it appeared in the Initial D anime in the late ’90s, the drift scene latched on, and a humble two-door Corolla became one of the most sought-after JDM classics on the planet. Clean examples are very hard to find now, which is exactly the problem TOM’S Heritage set out to solve with its new restoration program.

More Than a Restoration
What started as a bare chassis unveiled at Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 became a complete, running car by TAS 2026 following two years of work. For the task, TOM’s Racing’s Heritage sub-label took a Toyota Corolla Levin donor from the ’80s (meaning no pop-up headlights) will strip everything down, addressing corrosion issues and bringing body rigidity up to modern standards through additional spot and MIG welding.

The body itself faithfully reproduces the original Levin shape, but underneath sits a revised aero panel engineered to improve ground effect and overall balance. Meanwhile, the exterior will remain period-correct.

Under the Hood
Starting from the NA1600 race unit TOM’S developed for open-wheel competition, the 4A-G has been bored out to 1,626cc and tuned for the road, but without losing its edge. Peak output lands at 192hp at 7,980rpm, with torque pulling strong at 141lb.ft of torque at 6,490rpm. The stock car made 158hp and ran on regular fuel, while this one runs on premium.
Inside, the original seats are rebuilt on a urethane base and retrimmed in a woven fabric that matches the period weave. There’s also a vintage TOM’S steering wheel fitted, and the door liners are updated to match.

The Igeta lattice wheels are back too, newly reissued in a two-piece construction that widens the offset range for broader fitment. They’re wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE-11RS rubber in 195/50R15, a meaningful upgrade from the 185/60R14 that came from the factory.

Recap
TOM’s Heritage Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 Restoration Program
TOM’S Heritage, the restoration arm of legendary Japanese Toyota tuner TOM’S Racing, has launched a full “reconstruction” program for the classic AE86 Corolla Levin — stripping cars to bare chassis and rebuilding them with a 192hp race-derived 4A-G engine, period-correct interior, and revived Igeta wheels. Pricing starts at around $82,500 if you bring your own car, or just over $103,000 if TOM’S sources one for you.
