Airstream’s catalog of caravans is arguably the most recognizable of all the different trailers on the market, and its iconic Basecamp 16 has always been one of the best options for off-grid terrain. Likewise, few retailers know the outdoors quite like REI Co-op, which is why the two came together for a new take on the famed trailer.
The primary focus of this joint effort is a strive for sustainability. This is put on full display in numerous ways, including the collaborative Basecamp’s recirculating water heater that warms water before dispensing it, so you don’t have to waste any water as you wait for it to heat up. The trailer also features a high-tech UV-LED water purifying system and an optional composting toilet. Plus, it includes an exclusive, solar-powered upgrade in contrast to the standard Basecamp, as it garners up to 360 watts from rooftop solar panels and a 200Ah battery bank for extra power when needed.
On the topic of solar panels, the trailer is available in two iterations: the standard 200W package and an exclusive 360W package, the former of which is available with the Airstream’s regular, non-REI model. With both brands aiming to lower the trailer’s overall carbon footprint, they also implement sustainable materials throughout its fully-kitted interior. These include stain-resistant fabrics composed of post-consumer recycled materials and cabinetry crafted from responsibly-sourced wood, deeming it an eco-conscious home on wheels. As far as sleeping arrangements go, the Basecamp 16’s convertible dinette turns into a bed fit for two.
In addition to the amenity-filled build, the trailer comes equipped with a 25-piece REI product kit packed with camping essentials, including chairs, utensils, and more. The Airstream x REI Co-op Basecamp 16 is now available at authorized dealers starting from $52,900.
