While cars were once the most practical choice for most commuters, the constantly increasing number of people residing in major cities coupled with shorter and shorter average commutes have together increasingly made electric bicycles and cargo bikes an attractive alternative to driving a car. Doubling down on this concept, German firm MATE. has now engineered what it believes to be the ultimate urban commuter and kid hauler with the MATE. SUV Cargo e-trike.
Touted as MATE.’s most advanced electric bike to date, the SUV is constructed around an aerospace-grade aluminum frame that’s composed of 90% recycled material and wrapped in an innovative shock-absorbing box structure with an integrated LED light bar. Awarded GOLD at the German Design Awards, the MATE. SUV features an Oli Edge 250-watt mid-drive motor with Enviolo internal gears that generates an impressive 66.3ft-lbs of torque — a figure that’s double that of Yamaha’s latest YZF-R6 Supersport motorcycle. Thanks to a potent battery pack, the cargo trike’s powertrain is capable of delivering a top speed of 15mph and a range of over 60 miles on a single charge.
Equipped with 210-liters of storage space, the SUV has been treated to a front storage bin that features a modular design that allows it to accommodate a wide variety of optional accessories such as interior seats for children and an all-weather roof. Measuring 86.6” in length and 36.2” wide, the SUV is also outfitted with a cutting-edge array of smart features such as 4G connectivity, live location tracking, and anti-theft protection, just to name a few. Produced in four color options, the cargo trike also boasts hydraulic twin disc brakes, an adjustable seat height, and a trio of fender-equipped spoked wheels.
Scheduled to begin deliveries in September of 2023, the MATE. SUV Cargo E-Bike is currently available for preorder, requiring a deposit of just 400kr (~ $39).
