Despite its builder having high hopes for claiming a podium finish — if not an outright victory — at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Alpine-Renault A220 racer ultimately came up short and was bested by its competition. Rather than calling it quits, the team behind the car opted to instead take on A220 example  (Chassis #1731) and modify it for rally racing by shortening its wheelbase and truncating the LM racer’s longtail rear-end by nearly a foot — a recipe that proved to be successful as the car began racking up its fair share of podiums and wins at shorter more technical circuits. Half-a-century-later and Chassis #1731 is now serving as the inspiration for a modern Alpine-based supercar dubbed the AGTZ Twin Tail.

The AGTZ Twin Tail is born out of a collaboration between legendary Italian coach builder Zagato and Polish exotics dealer La Squadra. The car draws heavily from the late ‘60s era Alpine-Renault A220 race car, putting a sleeker, sharper, and markedly more modern spin on the Le Mans racer’s flowing bodywork. Inspired by the story of Chassis #1731, the AGTZ Twin Tail features a Le Mans longtail-style rear-end that sees its bottom capped off with an oversized diffuser. The vehicle takes its name from the fact that its longtail setup can be removed, resulting in a shorter, more nimble supercar.

Zagato and La Squadra have yet to reveal any details on the limited edition model’s specs or hardware, though it does appear to be based on the current Alpine A110. As such, the Twin Tail will presumably feature a mid-mounted turbocharged 1.8-liter four-banger making at least 250hp. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see the limited edition supercar model retain the normal A110’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, rear-wheel drive setup, 4.5-second 0-60mph time, and sub-2,500lb curb weight. The Twin Tail will also be limited to just 19 units worldwide — each of which will be built on a made-to-order basis, with customers being given an enormous host of bespoke and configurable options.
