The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is far and away one of the most famous American cars ever built. Iconic for its aggressive design, powerful (sometimes) V8 engine, and impressive handling for the era, the Trans Am captured the hearts of a generation of gearheads, especially upon becoming the official vehicle of Burt Reynolds’ bootlegger in the hit 1977 movie, Smokey and the Bandit. Now, you have the chance to stage your own interstate run of Coors beer, as the late actor’s very own 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is going under the hammer at Barrett-Jackson.
Some things in life are too good to be true at first glance, but this car is not one of them. It is in resplendent condition, sporting a Starlight Black-and-Gold finish and gorgeous black leather interior. Even cooler, the car itself was the only ’77 Trans Am that Reynolds himself ever owned, having been gifted the promotional-edition car (note: this exact car did not appear on-screen) as thanks for the film’s massive success. Powering this beast is a 180-hp 400ci V8 engine that’s mated to an M40 3-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the car was optioned with air conditioning, a twin-hatch T-roof, and even comes with Reynold’s autograph on the glovebox. The car is even equipped with a CB radio, presumably so you can keep an eye out for Smokey, though it’s unclear if it’s in working condition.
Reynolds reportedly only drove the car on rare occasions until selling it in 2014, and under its second owner, the Pontiac was completely restored to mint condition, down to the gold striping, gothic lettering, and hand-painted “Bandit” lettering on the doors. If all of that isn’t enough to sell you on such a car, then perhaps the inclusion of an engraved dedication plate in the driver’s door, an autographed copy of Burt Reynolds’ autobiography, a 1970s-style Trans Am jacket, and the “Bandit” cowboy hat that all come included with the car will.
