Vintage off-road trucks are just awesome. Their old-school ruggedness, military-inspired simplicity, and minimalistic design always seem to strike a chord in the hearts of gearheads. While some of the first vehicles that come to mind when thinking vintage off-roaders are usually Land Rovers and Jeeps, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ series has developed a cult following for its iconic body style and utility. While the Land Cruiser FJ40 was discontinued in 1985, they are still popular and rapidly increasing in value among collectors. This made us all the more excited when we found one for auction on Bring a Trailer.
This particular truck on auction is a spectacularly refurbished 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. It features a 3.9L V6 engine that’s mated to a three-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case. According to the seller, the V6 engine was serviced with a replacement carburetor, fuel pump, hoses, belts, and exhaust components to improve its performance. Other performance-related augmentations include replaced wheel cylinders, shoes, suspension, and brake master cylinder. Aesthetically speaking, this 1972 FJ40 looks like it did in its heyday. The previous seller repainted it in beige to retain its military-inspired design, as well as adding classic exterior features like hard and soft tops, rear jump seats, Rancho shocks, and brown trim accents. The truck features a set of reupholstered inward-facing rear benches in the back that, while highly unsafe, invoke a classic 4×4 feel that we all know and love.
This FJ40 also features swing-out rear ambulance doors as well as a brown-painted grille, running boards, hood latches, and badges. In its interior, it sports three-across front seats that were also reupholstered in brown vinyl, along with a replaced dash pad. While this FJ40 embodies a true Theseus’s Ship paradox, it is undeniably cool and a must-have for any collector of vintage 4x4s. You can bid on this 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 on Bring a Trailer’s website.
