There are numerous marks of validation that afford a custom build prestige, from being featured in a prominent car magazine to winning prestigious awards at auto shows to being immortalized as a miniaturized Hot Wheels car. And it’s this latter honor that this 2019 SEMA Show build received — a spare-no-expense race car project that’s currently sitting on the online auction block of Bring a Trailer.
Built by Long Beach, California-based customs shop Blasko Racing in 2016 and displayed at the Eibach booth at the 2019 SEMA show, this 1969 BMW 2002 race car build has received a slew of performance upgrades including a completely overhauled suspension setup with Bilstein shocks, front camber plates, and aftermarket springs, plus a fiberglass hood and trunk lid, Turbo-style pig cheek fender flares, bumper deletes fore and aft, a custom front splitter, plexiglass side and rear windows, and eight-spoke 13″ Panasport wheels shod in Hoosier racing slicks.
Mated to a Getrag five-speed manual transmission with a welded differential, the build’s engine consists of a 2.0-liter M10 inline-four that’s been fully blueprinted before being treated to a lightened crank, shot-peened rocker arms, custom forged pistons and con-rods, and a custom exhaust system. Fortified via an eight-point roll cage, the gutted race interior of the car also boasts a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, a custom dash and instrumentation setup, and Cobra Evolution Sport racing seats with Crow Enterprises harnesses. The project’s finishing touch is a white livery juxtaposed via classic Warsteiner-BMW M stripes and Hot Wheels, Mattel, and Eibach logos.
Located in San Diego, California, this 1969 BMW 2002 SEMA race car build by Blasko Racing is currently being auctioned off on Bring a Trailer, where, at time of writing, bidding has reached $18,000 with six days remaining on the sale. Alongside the car itself, the sale also includes a 1/64 scale Hot Wheels model of this exact build from the brand’s CAR CULTURE series, as well as a Leen Pin of the build, vehicle log books noting this example’s Vintage Auto Racing Association event participation history, and itemized invoices for the build that total over $82,000.
