Mercedes-Maybach’s 2027 S-Class Update Proves the Ultra-Luxury Sedan Formula Is Far From Dead

In the ’90s, Daimler tried to revive Maybach as a full standalone brand to go toe-to-toe with Rolls-Royce and Bentley, and it didn’t stick as well. What did stick, quite brilliantly in hindsight, was the decision to fold the Maybach name back into the S-Class hierarchy as an ultra-luxury trim tier. That repositioning over a decade ago turned out to be exactly the right call, and today the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class quietly outsells its traditional rivals while still delivering the rear-seat theater and bespoke excess those buyers demand.

The 2027 model is the most extensively updated version of this formula to date, and after 105 years with the Maybach name, it still knows how to impress.

More of a Statement

For the latest update, the exterior refresh is more assertive than what came before. Up front, the signature Maybach grille has grown 20 percent larger and now features an illuminated surround, with the Maybach wordmark backlit inside the frame. It’s paired with rose gold accents on the twin-star headlamps, an illuminated C-pillar emblem, and an optional lit Mercedes-Benz hood star. A new Nautical Blue Metallic joins the Night Series palette, and it might be our favorite variant in years.

The silver-finish forged wheels now feature a floating Mercedes-Benz star mounted on a ball-bearing mechanism, meaning the three-pointed star stays perfectly upright regardless of wheel rotation. Rolls-Royce has been doing something similar for years, and it was frankly overdue here.

A Glorified Limo

If you’re buying a Maybach S-Class, you almost certainly aren’t driving it yourself, and Mercedes knows that. The rear cabin gets the lion’s share of attention here. Two 13.1-inch rear displays now come standard (previously optional), each paired with a redesigned remote control for climate, sunshades, entertainment, and even video conferencing via integrated cameras. The refrigerated compartment behind the rear armrest holds up to 10L and cradles the silver-plated Robbe & Berking champagne flutes that have been part of this car’s ritual since 2002. Automatic comfort doors are standard on V12 models and optional on the V8.

Mercedes calls the design intent a “cocooning effect,” thanks to the rear cabin’s total sensory separation from the outside world. The Active Ambient Lighting system features 199 LEDs and 64 color options, including Maybach-exclusive Rose Gold White and Amethyst Glow. New open-pore oak and herringbone-patterned amber wood trim round out the cabin’s features.

Two Powertrains to Choose From

Two powertrains are available in the U.S.: the revised M177 EVO twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 mild-hybrid producing 530hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the S 580, and the 6.0-liter biturbo V12 in the S 680 making 621hp and 664 lb-ft. Both hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds through a nine-speed automatic with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The V8 has been significantly reworked with a flat-plane crankshaft design and integrated starter-generator.

The updated AIRMATIC air suspension system connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud via Car-to-X data, pulling anonymized road condition information from other connected Mercedes vehicles ahead of you and pre-adjusting damping before your wheels ever encounter a bump.

The Brains Got An Upgrade Too

This is the first Maybach to run Mercedes-Benz’s MB.OS, the company’s unified operating system. The fourth-generation MBUX Superscreen spans three displays up front: a 12.3-inch gauge cluster with rose gold dials, a 14.4-inch central infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. The MBUX Virtual Assistant is now AI-powered, drawing on ChatGPT 4o, Microsoft Bing Search, and Google Gemini simultaneously. Over-the-air updates will keep the system evolving post-purchase, including the eventual rollout of MB.Drive Assist Pro for point-to-point semi-autonomous navigation.
