Singer’s First Drop-Top 911 Is the Ultimate Open-Air Love Letter to Porsche’s Widebody Era

Singer Vehicle Design has turned its attention to the convertible. The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer takes the rare widebody variant from the mid-1980s — a G-model that Porsche offered with Turbo bodywork but naturally aspirated power — and reimagines it for modern performance standards. It’s the California restomod specialist’s first proper Cabriolet offering, forcing them to face the structural challenges that have historically been an issue for open-top 911s while delivering the same meticulous execution Singer’s built its legendary reputation on over the past fifteen years.

Problems Solved

For the task, the industry-changing California outfit starts with a donor Type 964 chassis, strips it to bare metal, then reinforces it with composite and steel strengthening, addressing the traditional “floppy-convertible” problem at its root. The widebody carbon fiber shell comes straight from those muscular Turbo-look variants of the ’80s but is re-engineered for modern aerodynamics and weight savings.

Singer’s new Z-pattern folding roof mechanism completely redesigns the original system, shedding weight while maintaining a clean silhouette, top up or down.

The Heart of the Matter

Under the engine cover sits a 4.0-liter flat-six that Singer developed with Cosworth — yes, that Cosworth, the same firm building engines for Aston Martin and Bugatti hypercars. This is Singer’s first engine with variable valve timing, featuring water-cooled heads mated to air-cooled cylinders (shades of Porsche’s 959) and an electric fan borrowed from their DLS Turbo program.

The output boasts 420hp spinning to 8,000 rpm, routed through a six-speed manual to the rear wheels. A newly developed titanium exhaust ensures that flat-six wail sounds perfect, while Singer’s equipped four-way adjustable dampers, carbon ceramic brakes from their DLS services, and 18-inch center-lock wheels. You can also select from five drive modes to dial in exactly how much electronic intervention you want.

Looking the Part

The interior follows Singer’s philosophy of restrained luxury. Hand-built gauges bring watchmaking standards to the dashboard, while stitched and burnished leather seams run throughout the cabin. In terms of tech, you get discreet navigation and CarPlay connectivity that won’t distract from the analog driving experience.

Two debut examples showcase the range. One in Pacific Blue gives off a touring aesthetic with a speed-activated rear wing and velvet corduroy sport seats in Tangerine. The other, Guards Red, goes more track-focused with a fixed whale tail and lightweight track seats. Yet, both have the same mechanics under the hood.
