A dominant force in the cruiser bike category for over 100 years, Harley-Davidson thrived on the loyalty of its customers but the tides are shifting. Its loyal riders are aging out of the hobby and the Wisconsin-based marque knows that it must evolve to prevent obsolescence. The answer came about a decade ago when it decided to make its very first electric motorcycle.
Unveiled as a prototype in 2014, the Black and Orange’s LiveWire eBike was eventually turned into a production vehicle in 2019, and then a full-fledged sub-brand in 2021. The fledgling firm’s first two eBikes, the S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland, were inspired by flat trackers and cruisers, respectively. However, the third model in the S2 line, dubbed the Alpinista, is a sportier take on its predecessors but with some elements akin to both.

Blending Track and City Riding
Urban-focused like the Mulholland, the Alpinista rides on 17-inch wheels and Dunlop Roadsmart IV tires which offer lean angles of 52.1º left and 44.2º right, along with improved comfort and handling, whether you’re headed to and from work or exploring a winding mountain road. Billed as a “do-it-all” eBike, the build also helps deliver supermoto-like agility by reducing the seat height by 1.1” compared to the track-inspired Del Mar.

A More Custom Riding Experience
Cornering safety features include enhanced antilock braking and traction control, in part thanks to the 6-axis Bosch IMU. The bike comes with four preset riding modes and two custom modes that give the rider the ability to tailor their riding experience to their liking by customizing the bike’s performance and response, whether you’re a novice or expert rider.
A member of the S2 platform with a 10.5kWh battery pack, the Alpinista boasts 84hp, 194lb.ft of torque, and a 3.0-second 0-to-60 time. Inside the 434-pound bike, the motor also gives the rider up to 120mi of city range and 71mi of highway range, supporting standard Level 1 and Level 2 charging.
Later this year, LiveWire says that more accessories will become available, including a sports seat, a windscreen, soft and hard bags, luggage racks, and “cosmetic enhancements.”
