With BMW’s M5 Sedan, fans of both fast cars and premium comfort could have their cake and eat it too. When it debuted in 1985, it was the fastest production sedan ever seen. And now, 40 years later, it’s trading in its full combustion engine for a plug-in hybrid powertrain without missing a beat… well, almost at least. This is the 2025 BMW M5 Sedan. Let’s dive in…

What’s New Under the Hood?
Retaining the M TwinPower Turbo 4.4L V8 engine but now pairing it with an electric motor, the new hybrid M5 now delivers a total of 717hp and 738lb.ft of torque — bettering the outgoing model’s 591hp and 553lb.ft of torque. However, the V8 engine alone is actually slightly lower by itself with 577hp and the same torque. One significant downgrade with the hybrid is its reduced speed. It now clocks a 0-to-60 time of 3.4 seconds, whereas the previous gas model did it in 3.2 seconds. The top speed remains at 190mph while a new “Boost Control” setting automatically toggles all of the performance settings for a more thrilling driving experience.
The main reason for the slightly slower acceleration is that the addition of the electric motor also adds more than 1,000lbs, for a total now of 5,390lbs. Battery motors weigh a lot so there’s not much surprise there, except that the non-hybrid version of the M5 was already a hefty vehicle without one. It’s why a few years back there was the push to switch from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive in order to shave off poundage (among other things). The hybrid M5 can also give you 25 miles of purely electric driving range.

Visual Appeal
For the 7th-gen M5, color options include one solid and nine metallic options, including the green that’s been featured in all the press materials. The BMW kidney grill gets a slight redesign with a high-gloss black finish. It’s also now almost fully enclosed with LEDs illuminating the border and a center bar with the M5 badging. The wheels are also a bit wider this time around, with wider arches as well.
The five-passenger interior is pretty luxurious with four climate control zones, model-specific interior lighting, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a panoramic glass sunroof, and merino leather seats in four color options. These also get a new Full Merino Metallic leather trim on the head and shoulder areas, which is part of the BMW Individual customization program. BMW is very excited about the visual pop that this metallic trim will offer, as it uses a special High Definition Design process that hasn’t been used on any other production car before. For the driver, you’ll get a new steering wheel design with heating capability.
