First unveiled at the turn of the millennium before entering production the following year, the Toyota Sequoia is essentially a full-size SUV version of the Japanese automaker’s Tundra pickup. Despite having spent last the 20 years in constant production, it’s been a decade-and-a-half since the SUV was treated to a major model revision, however, that’s now changing with the introduction of the new third-generation Sequoia for the 2023 model year.
Completely redesigned from the ground up with an all-new frame and bodywork, every version of the newest iteration of the three-row SUV is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain — the same forced-induction, gas-electric mill previously unveiled on the Tundra — that’s good for 437hp and 583ft-lbs of torque. Taking its name from California’s coastal redwoods, the new Sequoia is being produced in five different trims: the SR5, the Limited, the Platinum, the TRD Pro, and the Capstone. Sitting just above the base model SR5, the Platinum version sports a 14-speaker JBL premium audio system, a panoramic moonroof, an HUD, high-grade LED head and taillights, sequential indicators, rain-sensing wipers, and onboard wireless charging – all as standard. The high-performance TRD version of the Sequoia (seen here in the photos) features TRD-tuned FOX internal bypass shocks, a 0.25” aluminum TRD front skid plate, Multi-Terrain Select with CRAWL and Downhill Assist Control, a heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” grille with an embedded TRD LED light bar, Pro-specific black 18” TRD alloy wheels, a dual TRD Pro exhaust setup, and a TRD roof rack.
Touted as “the most luxurious Sequoia to date,” the Capstone model — which sits at the top of the range — has been treated to all of the features present on the Platinum spec, plus boasts unique chrome accents, 22” chrome wheels, semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats, sound-mitigating acoustic glass front windows, a cabin with a Capstone-exclusive black-and-white color combination, authentic American Walnut trim with an open-pore finish, LED mood lighting, and special Capstone badging. Toyota is also offering available upgrade packages for the lower-spec variants such as a TRD Sport Package for the SR5 that includes 18” TRD wheels, TRD sport-tuned Bilstein monotube shocks, aluminum pedals, and several other bits.
Pricing has yet to be revealed for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia, though we anticipate the new third-gen model to start from around $50,000 for the SR5 and go up to around $65,000 for the TRD-spec and $75,000 for the top-of-the-line Capstone version — similar pricing to that of the 2021 Sequoia model range. Assembled in San Antonio, the new Sequoia is also expected to enter dealerships over the summer of 2022.
