First introduced in 1983, the Toyota 4Runner is a popular mid-sized SUV that’s racked up over 4,000,000 global sales since its launch. With 2023 marking four decades since the model’s release, Toyota has opted to celebrate the occasion via a limited run of 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition SUVs.
Based on the existing SR5 Premium trim level, the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition is being offered in a trio of paint options — White, Midnight, Barcelona Red Metallic, or Black Metallic (seen here) — that are all complemented via a special retro-inspired red, orange, and yellow graphics package that was designed specifically for this limited edition 4Runner and pays homage to early vintage desert racers. Further separating it from existing 4Runner models are a special set of bronze-finished 17” six-arm split-spoke alloy wheels, a bronze-colored 40th Anniversary exterior tailgate badge, and a body-color-matching “TOYOTA” heritage grille.
The cabin of the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition also boasts exclusive badging, a bronze-colored cross-stitch shift knob, matching bronze-colored seat accent stitching, special 40th Anniversary floormats, and a power moonroof as standard. Because the SUV is based on the SR5 Premium, it retains the trim level’s 270-hp 4.0liter V6, blindspot monitoring, seating for up to seven, SofTex-trimmed seats, HomeLink universal transceiver, Smart Key System, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Toyota Safety Sense package also comes as standard.
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition will be limited to only 4,040 units (for the U.S. market), and while pricing has yet to be revealed, we anticipate an MSRP that’s a few grand above the standard $41,515 SR5 Premium-spec 4Runner.
