While revealing the prototype for the Lucid Air back in 2016, the California-based EV automaker didn’t end up rolling out the high-performance sedan until 2021. The all-electric Air boasted a crazy 1,111hp and more than 500mi of range off a single charge. Since then, the car has been the brand’s flagship (and only) model until the unveiling of the Gravity SUV last year, which begins production for 2023. Always pushing the limits of this modern age of battery-powered vehicles, Lucid turned out to have something incredibly impressive planned for this year’s Monterey Car Week.
Upgrading the performance of the Air, Lucid has debuted the Air Sapphire, with the new Sapphire sub-brand along with it. The company is billing the car as the “world’s first luxury electric super-sports sedan.” With a top speed upwards of 200mph, it’s also quite possibly the fastest. Although final horsepower numbers aren’t yet available, we know that it will be more than 1,200hp. Likewise, Lucid has reported a 0 to 60mph time of under 2 seconds, a 0 to 100 time of under 4 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of less than 9 seconds.
While begging the question of how the driver of this five-seater will find an extra four people willing to let him take them toward the 200-mph limit, it’s safe to say the vehicle would be fun to be inside even if it weren’t moving at all. Underneath the aerodynamic curvature of the outer shell, the interior features leather 18-way power sport seats, special Sapphire theming, and a glass canopy roof.
The Lucid Air Sapphire will see a limited production run, with a $249,000 price tag and deliveries commencing in 2023. Reservations open up on August 23 at 9 am PDT.
