Mercedes Celebrates 55 Years of AMG Performance with a Limited-Edition G 63

Short for “Aufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach,” AMG is a German tuning outfit that was founded by ex-Mercedes-Benz engineers in 1967. And while today AMG is closely tied to the MB brand, this wasn’t always the case, as the tuner spent the first four decades of its existence operating as an independent firm before being bought out by DaimlerChrysler and becoming Mercedes-AMG GmbH. And with 2022 marking AMG’s 55th anniversary, Mercedes has opted to honor the occasion via a limited-edition run of what’s almost certainly the most iconic AMG-spec model of all time, the G 63 SUV.

Decked out in the buyer’s choice of either an Obsidian Black Metallic or G Manufaktur Opalite White livery, the Mercedes‑AMG G 63 Edition 55 rides on a set of AMG-exclusive 22” forged cross-spoke wheels with a matte tantalum gray finish and a high-sheen rim flange. Alongside the special paint options, the limited-edition G-Wagen also gets the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night Package II, as well as a special AMG graphics package adorning the lower portion of the front and rear doors. There are also some smaller but still noteworthy elements that are unique to the Edition 55, such as a silver chrome AMG-badged fuel filler cap.

The cabin of the luxury SUV has also received a slew of modifications that are unique to the Edition 55. Trimmed in black and red, the interior now sports stainless steel door sill trims with red-illuminated AMG lettering, AMG-branded black velour floor mats with red contrasting stitching and “Edition 55” lettering, a DINAMICA microfiber AMG Performance steering wheel with “AMG” and “55” badges, AMG seats cloaked in two-tone (red and black) Nappa leather, and a matte caron AMG trim package.

Available for order now — albeit in limited numbers — until October, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Edition 55 SUV has been priced at roughly $19,675 over the G-Class AMG model’s $156,450 MSRP. Each Edition 55-spec G 63 also comes with a custom AMG car cover made from a breathable and tear-resistant shell with an antistatic flannel lining.
