Built around BMW’s 2000 Series platform, the CSL is a highly sought-after model that was first introduced in the Spring of 1971. By the tail-end of that year, the Bavarian brand would introduce the 3.0CSi — a Bosch fuel-injected version of the CS — or “Coupé Sport,” not to be confused with BMW’s current crop of “Competition Sport” models like BMW’s M2 CS and M5 CS.
Stretched out to accommodate BMW’s straight-six M30 engine, the CSi quickly proved its abilities on the race track, experiencing early and ample success in both the DRM and European Touring Car Championship. In addition to jettisoning its carburated setup, the 3.0CSi also boasted a markedly longer final drive, helping to make the most of the inline-six’s 200 horses. In total, only 8,199 specimens would ever be produced, and as a result clean specimens now command exorbitant amounts both at auction and on the resale market — as evidenced by this E9 3.0 CSi that’s currently being offered through the Avant-Garde Collection.
Sold new as a European market example before later being imported into the United States in the ‘80s, this ’73 specimen is equipped with chrome bumpers, a four-speed manual transmission, a wood-clad black leather interior, a woodgrain steering wheel with a hole-punched three-spoke design, 14″ wheels, a sunroof, and a period-correct Becker Europa AM/FM radio. The 3.0-liter mill at the heart of the car has been paired with a four-speed manual transmission.
