First introduced in 1977 before being renamed to its current monicker in 1982, the LEGO Technic range is an interconnecting rod-based line that’s always focused on using more utilitarian components that allow for more complex and, as the name suggests, technical designs that sport more advanced functions and capabilities. And while this more advanced LEGO sub-lineup has seen hundreds of different vehicle kits produced over its nearly half-century-long existence, including both cars and motorcycles, the brand has now rolled out what’s almost certainly one of the most ambitious kits to date with the all-new LEGO Technic Audi RS Q e-tron set.

Comprised of 914 pieces, the Audi RS Q e-tron model stands at 6” tall, 7″ wide, and spans 14.5” in length — making it a roughly 1:12th to 1:13th scale compared to the actual all-electric Dakar Rally racer. On top of the actual Audi racer’s bodywork and aero kit, this Technic set also features working independent suspension at all four wheels with a design that mimics that of actual long-travel off-road suspension. The entire kit also comes adorned in a replica version of the RS Q e-tron’s RR22 livery — a livery that’s interestingly also available on Ducati’s latest DesertX adventure motorcycle. This new model also features an all-new Technic wheel design. Created specifically for this kit, this wheel set represents a simplified, five-spoke version of the 17” forged aluminum items used on Audi’s Dakar racer. What’s more, the wheels of the kit also come shod in all-terrain LEGO Group tires.

Just like the actual RS Q e-tron 2022 Dakar racer, this kit packs a working battery pack that powers the vehicle. Best of all, this LEGO Technic kit is more than a mere “pusher,” and can be connected to the CONTROL+ app, which allows it to be controlled just like an RC car, albeit where the user’s smartphone becomes the controller. Additionally, the app also allows users to view 3D models of the kit along its various stages of completion — all of which can be rotated and zoomed-in on in order to better understand the kit. With the impressive details and realism seen on the kit, it will obviously resonate with grown-up rally and LEGO fans, though is also a fantastic introduction for kids into the world of motorsport engineering, as the kit is appropriate for youngsters ages 10 and up.
