When it comes to living outdoors, no skill may be more important than self-reliance. Now, Canada-based gear company VSSL has unveiled its Essentials Collection, four curated kits focusing on, well, the essentials; critical outdoor gear that comes in compact minimalist packages for better accessibility and storing.
The four different options range from fishing to repair to just straight utility. The Catch & Cook Kit offers angler essentials such as a tackle tin — which itself holds 15 pieces of fishing equipment: rubber worms, hooks, and 50 feet of 20-pound line — a wire saw to cut larger pieces of wood, and a fire striker tin to help get your setup ready so you can actually eat what you catch.
The Fix Kit and the Ready Kit are two sides of the same coin. Where the Fix Kit provides repair essentials such as trail marking tape, zip ties, a sewing kit, gear twists, and a whistle, the Ready Kit offers tools for more granular needs such as building shelters or hanging wet clothes. This kit comes with a 25-foot rope, 8 feet of SurvivorCord, a compass, a razor blade, and a wire saw. There’s also the Mini Utility Kit, which comes with a quadruple-mode LED flashlight that lasts for 40 hours, a roll of adventure tape, 2 bamboo cloths for washing or starting fires, and an additional tin for storing whatever else you want.
The Essentials Collection also serves as a brand introduction for those who are just getting into the outdoors space and want to get better acquainted with one of the best and most innovative names in the industry. All four kits are available now through select retailers and via VSSL’s online store starting at $65.
