Since its inception in 2012, The James Brand has carved out a reputation as one of today’s most eminent EDC gear outfits, with an ever-growing selection of beautifully-designed, minimalist everyday carry items ranging from knives to carabiners to pens to multi-tools. And after more than a decade of being in operation, the Portland brand has now revealed its first-ever axe with The TJB Hatchet.

Instead of opting to design its first-ever axe itself, The James Brand chose to call on Adler — a renowned German brand dating back to 1919. Essentially a special collaborative-release version of Adler’s Rheinland Hatchet model, The TJB Hatchet is comprised of a USA-sourced 14” hickory wood handle with a non-slip coating, water-based lacquer in TJB’s signature black and lime hues, and the EDC brand’s classic JAMES° logo etched into one side of the handle’s shaft and Adler’s logo in the other. These aesthetic tweaks ultimately allow TJB to put its hallmark fashion-forward spin on this hatchet without compromising its utility which is backed by more than a century of experience and expertise.

Mated to the axe’s American hickory handle is a 1.35lb head in a traditional Rheinland pattern with an amply-sized, curved cutting surface that makes for an exceptionally versatile and effective tool. A slight curve in the handle’s shape also affords additional leverage, further increasing the head’s cutting and chopping power. Boasting an HRC rating of between 47 and 55 for hardness on the Rockwell scale, this camp hatchet’s head is cast from an unalloyed C60 medium carbon steel and sharpened and finished by hand. In addition to the axe itself, each unit comes with a gorgeous gift and storage box, a leather TJB lanyard, and a snap-secured axe head cover.
