Remette Pushes the Everyday Carry Envelope With Its Button-Actuated Framelock Knife

In recent years, we’ve seen button lock knives massively spike in popularity — and for good reason; they’re super easy to use, fairly fidget friendly, and are relatively cheap to produce. Framelock mechanisms, on the other hand, are more costly to manufacture and less easy to disengage, though are markedly stronger. Well aware of the pros and cons of button and framelocks, premium knife brand Remette has developed the RT-Meteor — a top-shelf everyday carry folder that offers the best of both worlds with a button-actuated framelock.

Building A Solid Foundation

The RT-Meteor is constructed around a 4.41-inch-long handle that’s milled from titanium. The handle is offered with half-a-dozen different inlay options, ranging from regular carbon fiber to marbled carbon to several FatCarbon variants. Sporting a shape that’s inspired by the silhouette of meteor shooting through the sky, the handle is rounded out with a tip-up 3D pocket clip that’s been precision-machined from titanium

An Elegant Workhorse

Mated to the titanium and carbon handle is a 2.99-inch long drop point blade crafted from top-shelf Böhler M390 super steel that’s rated at between 60 and 62 HRC for hardness on the Rockwell scale. Boasting an eye-catching pearlescent surface effect finish, the blade features a manually flat-ground edge that comes razor sharp straight from the factory. With a thickness of 0.13”, the blade can stand up to hard-use tasks, as well as basic EDC applications.

A Knife With Innovation On-Lock

With its titanium and carbon handle, and top-shelf M390 blade, the RT-Meteor is a premium knife through and through, though that’s not what makes it special. The factor that really makes the knife stand out from the crowd is its dual-system locking mechanism. The off-side of the handle sports a standard framelock that can be manually disengaged like any other Reeve Integral Lock-style setup.

Where things get interesting is on the show-side of the handle, where there’s a small ovular button near the spine. Thanks to a small linkage, when this button is pressed, it disengages the framelock — thereby offering the convenience of a button lock and the strength and security of a framelock. This admittedly isn’t the first time we’ve ever seen a button-actuated framelock — as Real Steel already debuted one on its Evolution, as did Reate with its T1000 (and T1000V2 and T6000) — but it’s almost certainly our favorite take on a knife with this type of lock.

Multiple Locks, Multiple Deployments

On top of its dual-system lock, the RT-Meteor also comes loaded with multiple blade deployment options. You get a uniquely-shaped set of titanium thumb-studs, along with a jimped front flipper tab that disappears when the blade is opened. Because the button also serves as something of a detention, the blade can also be opened by pressing the button and giving a little flick of the wrist — just like how you can with an AXIS-style lock.

Hallmarks Of A High-End EDC Knife

Thanks to a caged ceramic ball bearing pivot assembly and a meticulously-tuned detent, the knife offers outstanding action. We also love that the off-side of the handle is shaped in such a way that the user can easily get the meat of their finger behind the rear-side thumb-stud, allowing for effortless reverse flick-openings. And, in typical button lock fashion, this element makes the knife super fidget friendly. Lastly, while it’s largely subjective, the acoustics of this knife are incredible, opening with a pronounced metal-on-metal “click” sound. It’s also super drop-shut-friendly, which is another hallmark trait of true premium EDC knives

Why We Love It

What initially attracted us to the RT-Meteor — and what led to me personally ordering one — was its shape, material selection, and locking mechanism, though once actually getting our hands on the thing, we fell in love with it even more for a myriad of additional reasons. In typical Remette fashion, the RT-Meteor’s build quality is nothing short of superb. Sure, the thing is made in China, but its overall craftsmanship really is on-par with many Euro and USA-made blades. What’s more, the level of attention to detail is also pretty top notch, and it’s abundantly clear that every minute detail of this knife was considered — seen through elements such as how the button has been anodized to match the color of the handle scale inlays.
