Japanese retailer Muji is widely revered for its minimalist gear, from notebooks and kitchen appliances to clothing and even cars. While the products aren’t quite as popular in the States as in Japan, anyone in the know swears by the brand’s sleek designs, essentially comparing it to the country’s version of Ikea.
Its brand-free philosophy and stripped-back design were on full display upon releasing its aluminum suitcase in 2017. Now, it’s getting a matte black makeover to take it even further.
Back in Black
Frequent collaborator and legendary Japanese designer Naoto Fukusawa, known for his renowned work with the likes of Herman Miller, Magis, and Alessi, is the mastermind behind many of Muji’s most celebrated products, including the Aluminum Hard Carry Case here. This time around, we’re still getting that clean, logo-free look that Muji is known for, but with a stark, understated look that speaks for itself.
But that’s not the only change! The suitcase now comes with dual TSA locks instead of a zipper, giving you some much-needed protection you’d typically find on premium luggage pieces, but at a slightly more affordable asking price.
Customizable Comfort
On top of the new color and closure, the suitcase boasts an adjustable carry bar that offers three height settings for tailored comfort and fit. Down below, the suitcase rides on two-wheeled casters designed for smooth and stable movement, allowing for effortless travel through bustling airports, train stations, and city streets. Finishing touches include a carrying handle on the top and the side, as well as interior dividers to keep your stuff organized.

There’s no official word on whether the suitcase will make it to the States, but if you’re up for a trip to Japan, then the Muji Aluminum Hard Carry Case comes in both 34 and 60-liter options, with prices starting from 79,000 yen (~ $535) for the smaller option.
