If you live in the EDC world, GORUCK needs no introduction. The GR1 backpack has been sitting on our personal “GOAT” shortlist for years now, and we’ve reviewed pretty much every iteration of it the brand has ever made.
But the GR1 isn’t the only bag in the lineup worth paying attention to. The Rucker, GORUCK’s purpose-built bag for the sport that gave the brand its name, just turned ten. To mark the occasion, the brand rolled out the Rucker 5.0, the fifth redesign of the line and easily its most consequential update since lumbar padding showed up on the 3.0.
The Rucker vs. the GR1
Ok, a quick lay of the land for the uninitiated. The GR1 is GORUCK’s general-purpose tactical EDC bag. It’s the one we’ve long called the gold standard for daily carry. The Rucker, on the other hand, is its fitness-focused cousin. This pack is engineered specifically for rucking, the weighted-walking workout that’s exploded over the past decade.
Where the GR1 leans toward Special Forces durability, the Rucker leans toward ergonomics and load-bearing comfort. Both are bombproof, and both carry GORUCK’s lifetime SCARS warranty. The 20L and 25L Rucker sizes are also only a hair smaller than the equivalent GR1s, which is part of why so many EDC folks end up using the Rucker as a daily driver too.
The Velcro Problem, Solved
If you’ve spent any time on the rucking forums, you know the Rucker 4.0’s interior Velcro pockets were the most-griped-about part of an otherwise excellent bag. They were noisy, they collected lint and grit after a few months of dirt-road use, and opening one mid-ruck with cold hands was a two-handed affair.
The 5.0 swaps all of it for recessed magnetic closures on the two interior pockets. They’re tuned to stay shut under dynamic movement, open one-handed, and shrug off the debris that slowly kills Velcro.
A Lumbar Pad That Actually Cradles
The other headline change is the lumbar support, which has been completely re-architected.
Where the 4.0 had a flat 10mm EVA pad along the bottom of the back panel, the 5.0 introduces a contoured, dual-density foam pad that’s wider, thicker, and shaped to follow the curve of the lower spine. The center is recessed slightly to take pressure off the bony bits, with the foam concentrated along the lateral edges where the lumbar muscles actually want support.
While you might notice the upgrade on a quick walk with 20 pounds of plate, you’ll definitely notice it at mile eight with 45 pounds, when the 4.0 would start digging into your back.
