YETI Shrinks Its Mystery Ranch DNA Into a Sling That Ditches Zippers for Magnets

When a cooler company bought Mystery Ranch (one of the undisputed GOATs of pack design) many assumed the worst. Surely YETI’s $36.2 million was just buying the name and the packs would end up suffering for it. Of course, when the Ranchero backpacks showed up in 2025 with the brand’s beloved bones fully intact, suddenly the skepticism felt almost unwarranted.

Two years on from the acquisition, YETI has earned enough goodwill that we’re genuinely curious about what comes next. And what comes next is the formula shrunk way down with the new YETI Ranchero Crossbody sling.

The Mystery Ranch Family Tree

The Ranchero story started with the Bozeman, which was a limited-edition backpack that served as the two brands’ first joint project. By 2025 it had graduated into a permanent fixture of YETI’s catalog under the Ranchero name. The pack spanned 12 to 27 liters and carryied over Mystery Ranch’s beloved three-zip opening.

The Crossbody is the first Ranchero to break from that template. At 4 liters (or a truly tiny 1 liter), there’s simply no room for a triple zipper. So YETI decided to get creative.

Magnets Over Zippers

Instead of a zipper, the main opening relies on fabric-encased chain magnets running the full length of the mouth. Tug the pull tab and the whole thing yawns open for one-handed access. Let go, and it snaps shut on its own.

Now, magnetic closures on slings aren’t new, but running them across the entire opening rather than a single point is a clever bit of engineering.

Small Bag, Same Bones

Shrinking the silhouette didn’t mean cheapening the build. The shell is abrasion-resistant 700D Cordura nylon, the base gets a heavy-duty 840D nylon with a TPU coating, and the interior is lined in 210D ripstop.

Inside, you’ll find a spread of organizer pockets, a key leash, and enough room in the 4L to swallow an 18oz Rambler bottle. A 38mm webbing strap lets it ride crossbody or around the hips, and the hook-and-loop panel up front accepts YETI’s collector patches, if that’s your thing.
