CRKT Dresses Michael Walker’s Cult Blade Lock EDC Knife in Translucent Natural G10 Scales

Michael Walker’s BladeLock mechanism was one of those designs that knife people know about but rarely encounter in the wild. It debuted as a CRKT production knife back in 2001, quietly disappeared after a short run, and spent the better part of two decades living on forums as a cult footnote. The 2020s revival changed that, and now CRKT is pushing the knife further still with a Natural G10 colorway that is, without question, the most visually compelling version of this mechanism to date.

A Lock Worth Understanding

Walker, who is based in Taos, New Mexico and has been inducted into Blade Magazine’s Cutlery Hall of Fame, is the mind behind over 20 knife mechanisms, including the modern liner lock that effectively shaped the folding knife industry. The BladeLock is a different, lesser-known animal. He filed the patent in March 1990 and had it granted within months.

The mechanism operates via a spring-loaded tab sitting behind the thumbstud. Press down on the stud and push forward to deploy the blade, press down and pull back to close it. What separates this from a standard thumb stud setup is that the blade is positively locked in both the open and closed positions, rather than just open, as liner and frame locks do. It’s a more deliberate, mechanical interaction than what most pocket knife users are used to, and it rewards a little patience to dial in.

The Natural Treatment

Previous versions of the Walker Blade Lock leaned into a more tactical, blacked-out aesthetic. The Natural colorway swings in a different direction. The handle pairs a black stainless steel frame with a natural G10 overlay that’s a translucent, mint green scale with a crosshatched texture. It’s one of the more striking handle presentations CRKT has pulled off, and the contrast against the black stonewashed 14C28N sheepsfoot blade is sharp.

The 14C28N steel is a Sandvik/Alleima product that punches well at this price point, with solid edge retention and good corrosion resistance, and it’s easy to sharpen when needed. The sheepsfoot profile, at 2.93″, is a safe bet for EDC utility. There’s no tip to worry about, and it handles most everyday cutting tasks easily. The knife rides low in the pocket thanks to the deep carry clip and 4.1-ounce weight.

Released alongside a similarly appointed Padawan and CEO Microflipper ahead of Blade Show Texas as part of the Natural Collection, the Walker is undeniably the standout of the three.
