Hunting and outdoor knives have existed in one form or another for millennia, though Buck revolutionized this space with the release of its now-iconic 110 Folding Hunter. Designed by Al Buck, the 110 first hit the market in 1964 and remains one of the brand’s most popular and best-selling models. And with 2024 marking the 60th anniversary of the famed folding hunter, Buck has opted to celebrate the occasion via the release of a special limited edition 110.
The Basics
The Buck 110 60th Anniversary Edition is a special limited edition variant of Buck’s legendary folder. The knife gains numerous elements that are exclusive to this limited edition release, including a major material upgrade that massively improves the 110’s overall performance.
Getting A Handle On It
The 60th Anniversary 110 features the regular 110’s handle design and construction — a 4.875-inch item that’s constructed around an alloy liner and fitted with polished brass bolsters. Fitted with a sturdy lockback mechanism, the handle also boasts Crelicam ebony wood scales mated to the frame via brass pins. Set into the off-side’s ebony handle scale is a special “1964 60 Years” brass badge that helps to distinguish it from the standard 110.
Modern Metallurgy
While the anniversary badge on the handle is admittedly a cool touch, what really makes this limited edition 110 so noteworthy is the fact that it’s been treated to a massive blade steel upgrade. Replacing the 110’s normal 420HC construction is Crucible Industries’ truly revolutionary CPM MagnaCut — a modern, USA-made, powder metallurgy stainless steel that offers tremendous toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention, while being substantially easier to sharpen than other premium blade steels. Brought to life in MagnaCut, this limited edition 110’s blade consists of the standard 3.75-inch clip point item with a hollow grind.
A Buck First (…Sorta)
Earlier this year, Buck introduced MagnaCut as a blade steel option for the 110 on the company’s online knife configurator, however, this new limited edition variant marks the first time that Buck Knives is offering a production version of a MagnaCut-steeled 110 — albeit a limited production version. Buck also makes a huge slew of additional 110 variants — including a more premium CPM S30V-steeled variant and an auto version.
Why It’s So Special
Rather than trying to completely reinvent the wheel, Buck kept things fairly simply when coming up with this new limited edition release. The ebony scales, brass bolsters, and lockback have all long been key characterizing traits of the 110, so I actually appreciate how Buck opted to leave these elements unchanged, instead choosing to simply upgrade the blade steel — a tweak that allows this 60th Anniversary model to maintain the appearance of the original 110 while still offering much better edge retention and all-around performance.
