When it comes to everyday carry, a backpack is more than just storage –– it’s part of your kit, your workflow, and ultimately, your day-to-day efficiency. The right laptop backpack isn’t just about hauling a computer; it’s about protection, organization, comfort, and durability –– all wrapped in a design that works wherever you take it.
And that’s the challenge.
The market is saturated with options that either nail the aesthetics but skimp on functionality or offer solid protection but lack refinement. A true EDC-worthy laptop backpack needs to strike that perfect balance; smart internal organization, a well-padded laptop compartment (hopefully suspended with a false bottom), and a build that holds up to years of daily wear and tear. Materials matter here; ballistic nylon, Cordura, waterproof zippers, reinforced stitching, because a laptop backpack should be as durable as the gear inside it. In this guide, we’re going to break down the best laptop backpacks that deliver on every front. No gimmicks, no compromises. Nothing but top-tier, well-executed designs built for real-world EDC. Let’s get into it.

How We Tested
![Best EDC Laptop Backpacks Tested](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Best-EDC-Laptop-Backpacks-Tested-1000x667.jpg)
Selecting the right EDC laptop backpack comes down to balancing your personal needs, aesthetics, and functionality. Each model we tested for this guide offers unique strengths tailored to specific lifestyles. And while this is just a cross-section of what the space has to offer, we strongly believe that you can’t go wrong with any of these bags. For sourcing, we looked to brands we love in the backpack space, paying close attention to each bags visual style, organization options, laptop storage, weather resistance, capacity, and price.
From there, we sourced our units for testing, spending ample time with each bag, even the ones we’d had plenty of prior experience with. We looked closer at how each bag handled in terms of organization and how each bag protected our laptops. Obviously, we paid attention to the way each bag felt on our backs, especially when loaded with gear. These results and more are detailed below.

What to Look For
Laptop Storage: Obviously, laptop storage is a must when looking for a laptop backpack, but as the standard for laptop sizes change, so much the sleeves that hold them. Also, just because a company says its bag has a laptop sleeve doesn’t mean that sleeve has much padding or reinforcement. The last thing you want is a flimsy laptop compartment.
Weather Resistance: Many people who use these laptop bags are commuting or traveling. And with commuting and traveling comes unpredictable weather. To ensure your bag has the proper preparations, make sure they have water-resistant shells and zippers.
Tech Organization: If you’re heading out the door with your laptop bag, chances are you’ll want to bring along a charger or two (or three), some headphones, and maybe an external keyboard and/or mouse. To make sure these devices aren’t just floating around in your bag. For photographers, you might want some smaller storage for SD cards as well. Some bags include a dedicated compartment for a second device like a tablet.
Capacity: Your laptop won’t be the only thing you’re lugging around. As such, you should make sure your bag can hold enough for your everyday needs. This includes room for secondary devices, books, your lunch, or even a camera. Also, some bags won’t be tall enough for your keyboard, so keep an eye on that.
Comfort: Comfort is another key factor. Weight distribution, ergonomic straps, breathable back panels –– these aren’t just buzzwords; they dictate how the pack carries over long commutes or full workdays.

Pros
- Very comfortable
- Fantastic construction
- Laptop sleeve is well padded
- Budget-friendly
- Tech storage is user-friendly
Cons
- Main storage is slim
- Small water bottle holder
- Lack of false bottom in laptop sleeve
Timbuk2 is a brand that’s been at the heart of urban commuting and EDC culture since 1989. Born in San Francisco’s Mission District and founded by bike messenger Rob Honeycutt, the brand started with rugged, no-nonsense messenger bags built for the city. Fast forward to today, and Timbuk2 is still cranking out some of the best everyday carry backpacks for professionals, students, and travelers alike.
One of their flagship offerings? The Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe 20L—a refined, commuter-focused pack built for organization and comfort.
![Timbuk 2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe 20L 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Timbuk-2-Authority-Laptop-Backpack-Deluxe-20L-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
Right off the bat, this pack feels premium but understated.
The Eco Black Deluxe colorway has a sleek, professional aesthetic, and the recycled 420D nylon shell gives it a lightweight yet durable feel. The fabric is technically considered weather-resistant, but not fully waterproof— and seeing that it’s also not equipped with waterproof zippers or zip tracks, we definitely wouldn’t recommend using the pack in rainy, wet conditions.
Size-wise, we’re looking at 18.9 inches tall, 11.4 inches wide, and 5.31 inches deep—making it a solid medium-sized commuter bag. With a 20L capacity, it’s compact but still practical for daily essentials.
As far as hardwear is concerned, it’s got YKK zippers mated to textured, barrel-shipped zipper pulls that provide a solid grip. The compression straps on the front are perfect for keeping a jacket just an arm’s reach away, and the reflective details for added visibility at night are a small but thoughtful touch. There’s also a small Timbuk2 logo sewn to a small pass-through that’s perfect for attaching on a small bike light during 2-wheeled commutes.
For comfort, the padded shoulder straps are well-contoured, with an air mesh back panel that helps with breathability. The sternum strap is adjustable via a ladder system, giving you extra stability if you’re carrying a heavier load. And if you do plan on using this pack while traveling, it’s also equipped with a convenient luggage pass-through.
The side of the pack features a stretchy water bottle pocket, which fits a 24oz bottle comfortably – though we had issues fitting larger water bottles.
![Timbuk 2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe 20L 3](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Timbuk-2-Authority-Laptop-Backpack-Deluxe-20L-3-1000x667.jpg)
Loadout & Interior
When it comes to organization, the Authority Deluxe does a great job providing everything you’d need and expect without over-complicating things.
The front face of the bag features 2 pockets: one larger pocket that can be accessed via vertical zip flank complete with a hi-vis yellow key leash flanked by a smaller horizontal zip storage compartment that, although is not lined or padded, would be a great place to store a pair of sunglasses.
The front organizer panel features everything you’d expect from a tech pack -– small elasticated pockets for pens, chargers, and accessories, plus a zippered mesh pocket that’s great for securing small valuables that you can quickly see at a glance.
Opening the main compartment reveals a storage compartment that’s roomy enough for a light jacket, over-ear headphones, a tech pouch, and other misc EDC gear. There’s even a sleeve that’s perfect for an iPad or some inspirational reading material.
At the back, there’s a dedicated, padded laptop compartment that fits up to a 17-inch laptop, which is pretty impressive considering the overall footprint of the bag. But, it’s worth noting that this is one of the few backpacks on this guide where the laptop sleeve is not suspended (no false bottom), so while it offers decent protection, you’ll want to be careful when setting the bag down.
![Timbuk 2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe 20L 4](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Timbuk-2-Authority-Laptop-Backpack-Deluxe-20L-4-1000x667.jpg)
Overall Thoughts
If you’re a budget-conscious buyer that doesn’t want to sacrifice on quality, it’s hard to beat Timbuk2 here. While the smaller water bottle holder, slim main storage compartment, and lack of a false bottom should certainly be noted as shortcoming, the no-fuss tech storage, top-notch construction, and ultra comfortable wearing experience make this well worth the price tag for us.

Aer Tech Pack 3 X-Pac
![Aer Tech Pack 3 X Pac 1](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Aer-Tech-Pack-3-X-Pac-1-1000x667.jpg)
Pros
- X-Pac shell is lightweight yet highly durable
- Great minimalist aesthetic from Aer
- Laptop compartment has room for extra tech too
- High-vis interior makes it easier to see
- Can stand up on its own
- One of the best work-oriented backpacks on the market
Cons
- Water bottle holder prevents it from opening up completely
- Water bottle pocket is easy to access but stays hidden when not in use
- Rigid structure might not be for everyone
Aer has been making waves in the carry world since 2014, when they launched their first Kickstarter campaign out of San Francisco. Founded by Allen Choi, the brand quickly developed a cult following by blending sleek, modern aesthetics with uncompromising functionality—tailored for urban professionals, digital nomads, and EDC enthusiasts alike.
Today, we’re looking at the Aer Tech Pack 3 in X-Pac. Designed as a work-focused, tech-friendly EDC bag, the Tech Pack 3 refines what made its predecessors so great while adding a few new upgrades.
![Aer Tech Pack 3 X Pac 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Aer-Tech-Pack-3-X-Pac-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
The pack measures in at 18” in length, 12.25” in width, and 7” in depth, with a carrying capacity of 16L, and tipping the scales at 3lbs.
For the X-Pac version, Aer swaps their usual 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon for VX-42 X-Pac, a laminated, weather-resistant sailcloth that’s significantly lighter while maintaining impressive durability. It’s also full weather-proofed, further bolstered by the YKK Aquagard zippers (paired with triangular zip pulls) found on each and every compartment of the bag. And while we’d be confident in this bag’s ability to navigate some light showers, it’s important to note that the bag is not submersible.
The design remains signature Aer—clean, structured, and minimalist. No unnecessary branding—just a small blacked-out Hypalon Aer tag near the front of the bag, and an even smaller Aer tag found on the straps. The semi-rigid structure means it stands upright on its own, a small but underrated feature in daily use.
The back panel and shoulder straps have also been upgraded from the previous generation. The straps are better contoured, with denser padding, and the back panel features deeper air channels for improved breathability. The sternum straps can be easily adjusted with the integrated slider system and the magnetic closures are a nice touch.
The bag features a top- and side-carry handle along with a luggage pass through out back. And while the water bottle holder is a bit tight for larger bottles, we did appreciate the way it blends in when not in use.
![Aer Tech Pack 3 X Pac 3](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Aer-Tech-Pack-3-X-Pac-3-1000x667.jpg)
Loadout & Interior
When it comes to storage, the Aer Tech Pack 3 feels akin to a mobile office for creatives and modern professionals –– its meticulously designed organization makes it one of the best work-oriented backpacks on the market.
Opening up the pack, you’re greeted with the beloved hi-vis orange nylon interior (a hallmark of Aer’s X-Pac bags) for easily located contents within the pack.
The front admin compartment is where the bag’s EDC functionality kicks in, offering up multiple slip pockets for pens, a power bank, and other tech gear, a zippered pocket for small valuables, complete with matching orange key leash of course. There’s also a document sleeve out back. Meanwhile, a fleece-lined top pocket provides a secured and protected location for your sunglasses or a phone.
The clamshell-style opening of the main compartment makes packing and unpacking effortless, although the water bottle holder does prevent it from opening up completely –– a small nuisance, but one worth noting nevertheless. Inside, you get a large open space for books, a tech pouch, a pair of headphones, or even a light jacket. The stretch documents pocket is also great for a table or reading material.
Aer nailed the laptop compartment. It’s false-bottomed, suspended, and padded with soft lining, keeping your device safe from sudden drops. It fits up to a 16” MacBook Pro, which is perfect for most professionals.
![Aer Tech Pack 3 X Pac 4](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Aer-Tech-Pack-3-X-Pac-4-1000x667.jpg)
Overall Thoughts
While we understand that the rigid structure look might not be for everyone, we’re huge fans of the brand’s aesthetic, and we’re suckers for any space-age materials, X-Pac included. If you’re looking for a laptop backpack that offers up in storage in spades, all without compromising on a sleek, minimalist design aesthetic, you’d be hard pressed to find a better option than the Aer Tech Pack 3.

Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro 28L
![Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro 28L 1](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Bellroy-Transit-Workpack-Pro-28L-1-1000x667.jpg)
Pros
- Really great one-bag travel option
- Handsome aesthetic from Bellroy
- Luggage passthrough is useful for travel
- Highly comfortable
- Finds middle ground between tactical and corporate
Cons
- Not fully waterproof but still highly weather-resistant
Bellroy has been making refined, functional carry gear since 2010, when they launched their first slim wallets out of Australia. Founded by Andy Fallshaw and a team of industrial designers, the company quickly expanded into bags, pouches, and everyday carry essentials—always with an emphasis on smart design, premium materials, and a clean, professional aesthetic.
Bellroy’s flagship Transit Workpack Pro (seen here in the Olive-colored 28-liter configuration) stays true to this ethos. It is a work-and-travel hybrid pack designed for professionals who need more space without the bulk of a full-blown travel pack, and it’s gone on to become one of the brand’s most popular offerings.
![Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro 28L 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Bellroy-Transit-Workpack-Pro-28L-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
The Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro comes in at 28L and measures 20.1” x 12.6” x 7.1”. It’s carry-on compliant, making it a great one-bag travel option for work trips or daily commutes.
The bag is made from Bellroy’s signature Dura Nylon, a 100% recycled fabric that feels lightweight but strong. It has a smooth, matte finish that gives it a more premium feel than typical ballistic nylon. Unlike some work backpacks that can look overly tactical or too corporate, this one lands in that perfect middle ground—sleek and professional without being boring.
Like other bags on this guide, the bag isn’t fully waterproof, but thanks to the AquaGuard-style zippers (complete with leather zipper pulls), it’s highly weather-resistant and will handle a commute in light rain without any issues.
We were most impressed with this pack in the comfort department. The shoulder straps are well-padded with EVA foam and have a contoured design that makes them comfortable for all-day wear. The back panel features added ventilation, which is a nice upgrade from earlier Bellroy bags that tended to run hot. The retracting luggage pass through was also a nice touch.
Like the Aer Tech Pack, Bellroy has employed removable sternum straps that are fully adjustable with a similar slider system, and close via a set of magnetic hardware. We also appreciated Bellroy’s water bottle holder on this pack, which is a dedicated side compartment complete with YKK zippers. The hidden yet dedicated water bottle compartment is a trend we can certainly get behind.
There’s also another hidden side compartment (also concealed with a YKK zipper) that houses a secured key leash.
![Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro 28L 3](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Bellroy-Transit-Workpack-Pro-28L-3-1000x667.jpg)
Loadout & Interior
The Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro is designed for efficiency, with a smart pocket layout that makes sense for both work and travel.
The admin panel on the front face of the bag offers multiple slip pockets for pens, a power bank, and other misc EDC & tech gear, and a soft-lined top pocket offers quick access to sunglasses or a phone without the risk of scratches.
Opening the main clamshell compartment reveals plenty of space for hauling your gear, and a set of magnetic compression straps for packing extra garments or heavier jackets. The opposite side of the main compartment features a mesh zippered pocket for storage extra gear and tech accessories.
Out back is the dedicated laptop compartment, which is padded, lined with a soft material to prevent scratches, fits up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, and features a false bottom. There’s also a large suspended pocket perfect for hauling an EDC tech pouch.
![Bellroy Transit Workpack Pro 28L 4](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Bellroy-Transit-Workpack-Pro-28L-4-1000x667.jpg)
Overall Thoughts
So, who is this bag for? If you’re a commuter or office professional looking for a well-designed, durable, and comfortable backpack that transitions seamlessly between work and travel, the Transit Workpack Pro is a stellar option. It’s particularly well-suited for digital nomads and frequent flyers, thanks to its carry-on compliance, hidden security pocket, and smart laptop access. If you prefer a more minimalist bag with just enough organization and structure, this is a strong contender.

Black Ember Citadel 25L
![Black Ember Citadel 25L SS24 1](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Black-Ember-Citadel-25L-SS24-1-1000x667.jpg)
Pros
- A great option for those wanting a modular or slightly tactical bag
- Incredibly durable shell
- MOLLE webbing on straps make removing sternum strap a breeze
- Cool minimalist aesthetic
Cons
- Could definitely use a water bottle holder
- Modularity might be too much for some
Black Ember, founded in 2013 by Chris Gadway, is a San Francisco-based company renowned for crafting innovative, technical urban backpacks. Gadway, with a background in industrial design –– serving as Global Creative Director for both Nike and The North Face –– has steered the brand towards creating minimalist, modular designs that cater to urban commuters and travelers seeking both style and functionality. The Citadel R_3 25L exemplifies this commitment, offering a versatile solution for everyday carry needs.
![Black Ember Citadel 25L SS24 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Black-Ember-Citadel-25L-SS24-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
Measuring 20″ in height, 12″ in width, and 7″ in depth, the Citadel 25 provides a total capacity of 25L, and clocks in at 3.5lbs.
Constructed from Black Ember’s proprietary EmberTex, a 1220×600 denier nylon 66 fabric –– a proprietary textile that took Black Ember over a year to develop –– the backpack boasts exceptional durability, weather-proofing, and abrasion resistance. It’s also worth noting that EmberTex is now PFAS-free, meaning no more toxic, forever chemicals in the brand’s supply chain.
The exterior is further fortified with waterproof YKK AquaGuard zippers outfitted with Black-Ember-branded, Hypalon theft-deterrent locking zipper pulls, and a removable, hefty top-grab handle with metal-branded hardware.
Meanwhile, laser-cut and bonded Hypalon panels are strategically integrated into the shell, adding structure and enhancing the bag’s minimalist appearance. T6 anodized aluminum hardware is found all throughout, and the laser cut attachment points allow for the quick attachment of Black Ember’s modular components like the side handle for briefcase-oriented carry, and a pair of compression straps alongside the bottom of the bag, each seen here in hi-vis Ember orange.
For comfort, the Citadel 25L features ergonomic 3D shoulder straps made with dual-density EVA foam, providing both cushioning and support, and they can be fully adjusted at the top of the straps to dial in the perfect fit. The contoured back panel includes an air-channel to promote airflow, and MOLLE webbing running along each strap makes adjusting (or removing) the magnetic sternum strap a breeze.
![Black Ember Citadel 25L SS24 3](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Black-Ember-Citadel-25L-SS24-3-1000x667.jpg)
Loadout & Interior
The outermost storage compartments on the face of the pack are designed for quick-access items, while the top compartment features a FidLock magnetic quick-release keychain with a hint of hi-vis Ember orange.
Opening the main clamshell compartment reveals more of that gray-colored 200D ripstop nylon with a document sleeve, a zippered sleeve, and magnetic table sleeve that’ll accommodate devices up to 13″. On the opposite side is another document sleeve with plenty of open-space storage for EDC gear, headphones, tech pouches, and a jacket.
Wrapping out the interior is a fully-secured, heavily-padded, dedicated laptop pocket that fits up to a 16-inch laptop –– and of course, it’s also suspended with a false bottom.
Absent in the bag’s organization is a dedicated water bottle holder, and that’s most certainly a miss for us. While you could just toss the water bottle into the main compartment, you risk potential water damage to your other gear. It is worth noting that you can purchase an external water bottle holster, which attaches to the laser cut attachment points we mentioned earlier.
![Black Ember Citadel 25L SS24 4](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Black-Ember-Citadel-25L-SS24-4-1000x667.jpg)
Overall Thoughts
Black Ember is a brand that lives on the bleeding edge of soft goods technology, and Gadway’s impressive resume certainly shines through with the Citadel_R3. While we understand that its modularity and slight tactical infusion might be a bit much for some, we can appreciate any minimalist pack that’s chock full of utilitarian features, and built like a tank –– and the Citadel certainly is.

Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L
![Evergoods Cive Panel Loader 24L 1](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Evergoods-Cive-Panel-Loader-24L-1-1000x667.jpg)
Pros
- Highly ergonomic and contours to your body
- Easy to carry for travel with multiple grab handles
- Storage compartments are easy to access
- Stylish
Cons
- No dedicated water bottle sleeve
- Not the best if you’re into organization
Founded by industry veterans Jack Barley and Kevin Dee, EVERGOODS has consistently delivered products that seamlessly blend urban and outdoor functionalities. Barley, co-founder of GORUCK, and Dee, formerly of Patagonia, bring a wealth of experience to their designs.
And while it’s only been in existence since 2016, the Bozeman based brand has already cemented itself firmly in the EDC space. Armed with the goal of merging urban and outdoor performance into a single pack, the brand’s Civic Panel 24L was introduced just 7 years ago, and has quickly become the stuff of legend.
![Evergoods Cive Panel Loader 24L 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Evergoods-Cive-Panel-Loader-24L-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
The CPL24 measures 18″ in height, 11.5″ in width, and 7L in depth, providing a 24-liter capacity and weighs in at 3 lbs, 1oz.
It’s constructed with a shell fabric of custom-developed 840-denier ballistic nylon 6, which is solution-dyed for enhanced color retention and eco-friendliness, and the bag’s exterior features Duraflex hardware, and beefy YKK zippers with DWR finish and matching nylon zipper pulls.
A pair of handles run around the perimeter of the pack including a top grab handle and an elongated side handle for briefcase style carry when traveling.
Ergonomics in the name of the game here for Evergoods, and that was evident as soon as we got hands on with the pack. Evergoods employs an innovative harness system that creates one of the most comfortable wearing experiences for any EDC backpack, as the pack really contours to your body and moves with you.
The S-curve shoulder straps, crafted from dense EVA foam, are contoured to fit anatomically, distributing weight evenly and reducing strain during extended wear, and the back panel incorporates a two-layer construction of 3D spacer mesh and abrasion-resistant 50D monofilament woven fabric, promoting airflow and enhancing breathability.
There’s also a ladder adjustment system for the sternum strap, but we would’ve preferred a slider style system for those micto adjustments on the fly, especially considering how focused on ergonomics Evergoods is with their gear.
Like many of the bags on our guide, the exterior is devoid of any unnecessary embellishments, but is a small Velcro patch with the Evergoods logo on the front of the pack, allowing users the ability to put their favorite morale patch on display.
![Evergoods Cive Panel Loader 24L 3](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Evergoods-Cive-Panel-Loader-24L-3-1000x667.jpg)
Loadout & Interior
With ergonomics being front and center, Evergoods designed many of the pockets, including both the outermost pocket on the face of the bag and the laptop compartment, with vertical-access zippers.
The idea is that you’ll be able to swing the back around while still on-person, and easily access those storage compartments –– a feature we found quite convenient when using this bag on a daily basis at the office.
The aforementioned outer pocket features internal storage, including a zippered mesh pocket and a few sleeves for smaller EDC and tech gear. Sitting atop the pack is a quick-access storage pocket complete with a red key leash.
Upon unzipping the clamshell opening, we’re greeted with a top horizontal zip pocket and a much larger, vertical zip see-through mesh pocket right below. Adjacent to this is an elasticated document sleeve along with plenty of open-space storage for all of your gear including headphones, tech pouches, a jacket, and whatever else you’re carrying.
As previously mentioned, the dedicated laptop sleeve features a horizontal zip, allowing you to access your laptop while carrying in briefcase orientation, or swing the bag around to access your laptop without taking your backpack off. The suspended and padded laptop sleeve features a red Velcro latch for extra security on a device up to 16″.
We should also point out that this pack doesn’t include a dedicated water bottle sleeve either.
![Evergoods Cive Panel Loader 24L 4](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Evergoods-Cive-Panel-Loader-24L-4-1000x667.jpg)
Overall Thoughts
If organization is on the top of your list for a good laptop backpack, we’d encourage you to look elsewhere. Admittedly, that’s not the CPL4’s strong suit, and we understand why that would rule it out as a tech-oriented option. But, if you’re looking for a pack that’s well designed, incredibly durable, and backed by a literal lifetime warranty, Evergoods is certainly worth the hype. It might not look like much when seeing it from afar, but in person, it really does impress –– and most bag enthusiasts agree.

Mission Workshop Rhake VX
![Mission Workshop Rhake VX 1](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Mission-Workshop-Rhake-VX-1-1000x667.jpg)
Pros
- Tank-like construction
- Premium materials
- One of the most weather-resistant EDC bags you can buy
- Rolltop closure allows for a spacious bag
- Large laptop compartment
- Made in USA
Cons
- Heaviest bag on this guide, but still only 4lbs
- Potentially overwhelming interior pocket system but you learn to appreciate it
- Laptop sleeve is not suspended
Mission Workshop was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by the same minds behind Chrome Industries, and was named after the commuter-centric neighborhood in which they hail from. The goal with Mission Workshop was simple: build ultra-durable, weatherproof backpacks and gear designed to handle both city life and adventure travel.
Every Mission Workshop bag is designed and built in the USA, incorporating military-grade materials, precision construction, and a focus on lifetime durability. And while we’ve tested nearly every bag Mission Workshop pack (with several of our team members using them daily), Mission Workshop Rhake VX still remains one of, if not the, favorite bag from the brand.
![Mission Workshop Rhake VX 2](https://cdn.hiconsumption.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Mission-Workshop-Rhake-VX-2-1000x667.jpg)
Dimensions & Exterior
The Rhake VX measures 22” x 13” x 5” with a 22L capacity, expandable thanks to the rolltop closure. It weighs around 4lbs, which certainly makes it the heaviest bag on this guide. But, that weight certainly conveys the tank-like construction, and it translates to feeling more like high-quality construction than a burdensome carry when you’re wearing this pack daily.
While the Rhake is available in a handful of material constructions, we’ve already shared our proclivity for space-age materials (and X-Pack in particular), so it should come as no surprise that we opted to include the VX version, which features a VX-21 X-Pac fabric construction.
This fabric is lightweight, abrasion-resistant, and fully waterproof—ideal for a commuter or traveler who needs all-weather protection. The Rhake VX is made in the USA, using bonded, double-needle stitching for extra reinforcement. Every external zipper is urethane-coated YKK AquaGuard, and every seam is taped—making this one of the most weather-resistant EDC packs you can buy.
Mission Workshop uses military-spec Duraflex hardware throughout, with aluminum buckles securing the rolltop. And, there are also a set of FidLock magnetic compression straps running along the bag’s front 2 outer most facing pockets.
The shoulder straps are thick, EVA-padded, and contoured for comfort. They also feature Arkiv rails, making them compatible with Mission Workshop’s accompanying Arkiv accessories. The removable sternum straps are equipped with another FidLock magnetic release, and the MW logo can be found on the lower driver side strap.
The back panel is padded with mesh for airflow, and we found it’s done an adequate job keeping us cool, even during the hotter summer LA months. And, the Rhake also gets a luggage handle pass-through for travel.
There’s also a hidden collapsible water bottle holder complete with cinch down strap that discreetly zips away and lets you actually use this area as storage when not in use, and a small attachment loop at the base of the pack.

Loadout & Interior
Admittedly, exploring the Rhake’s internal organization can be quite overwhelming, but we can say, once you start using it regularly, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.
Opening the front two outer most facing pockets reveals plenty of internal storage. The left hand side stores three zippered pockets (two smaller stacked and one larger vertical zipper pocket on the flap itself. The right hand side is an open cavity for storing larger items like a notebook.
Below these two pockets is an exterior accessory pocket perfect for stashing tech accessories or other miscellaneous EDC gear, and above is a dedicated, suspended 10-inch tablet pocket. A metal hook holds together the rolltop closure, which gives access to a spacious compartment used to haul all of our larger EDC gear including jackets, over-ear headphones, tech pouches, and other accessories.
The Rhake’s main compartment is supplemented via a dedicated laptop pocket capable of securing a 17” laptop. However, it is NOT suspended, so be cautious when setting the bag down on hard surfaces.

Overall Thoughts
We can see how the lack of a false bottom seems like a missed opportunity on a bag that retails over $500. This pack is also far and wide the most polarizing design, and we definitely understand how intimidating this bag can be, even for bag enthusiasts like ourselves. But, the Rhake is built from absolute top-notch, premium materials entirely by hand in America –– it’s anything but an entry-level bag. And, for those looking for a grail EDC pack, Mission Workshop’s Rhake VX is among the best of them.
