It can be difficult to pinpoint the enigma of Casio’s G-SHOCK watch. For one, it reimagined the standard for durability upon its 1983 debut, promising to survive a 10-meter drop, go 100m underwater, and run for 10 years without needing a new battery. However, it was and always has been the design language of the G-SHOCK range that’s attracted wearers and cemented its staying power over the past four decades.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the very first G-SHOCK watch, the DW5000. Fairly accurate to the original from ‘83, Casio’s new GW5000U-1 serves as a reissue but with several upgrades to adjust to the evolved standards. For one, the stainless steel screw-back now protects a steel core rather than a resin one in order to make it even more rigid and reliable.

Pushing the water resistance up to 200m, the 42.8mm black case is also made of solid stainless steel for added durability. The accuracy is also ensured through Multi-Band 6, which gives radio-controlled time adjustments from six frequencies across the globe.

First released in the brand’s home nation of Japan, the new timepiece has now landed for American consumers. Head over to Casio’s website to grab your own G-SHOCK GW5000U-1 for $300.
