Tudor’s Bumblebee Black Bay Chrono Finally Shrinks to a Wrist-Friendly 39mm

Ever since the Black Bay Chrono landed in 2017, the loudest gripe about it had nothing to do with the watch itself. It was the size. At 41mm wide and a chunky 14.4mm thick, Tudor’s dive-meets-race chronograph wore big, and enthusiasts never let the brand forget it. Tudor finally listened with the vibrant Black Bay Chrono 39 “Bumblebee.”

Two Millimeters People Actually Asked For

While the dial might look like the headline (it’s certainly loud), for watch enthusiasts, it’s actually the case. For the first time, the Black Bay Chrono shrinks to 39mm, down from the 41mm that’s been the only size on the menu since launch.

It’s slimmer, too, dropping to 13.1mm thick from 14.4mm, while the lug-to-lug pulls in from a sprawling 49.9mm to a far friendlier 47mm.

And here’s the kicker: Tudor managed it without swapping calibers, cramming the same MT5813 chronograph movement into the tighter case. It’s the exact trick the brand ran with the Black Bay 58, and it lands just as well.

A Nod to the ’90s Tiger

Now, about that dial. The matte yellow against black sub-registers is where the Bumblebee nickname comes from, but the color isn’t a random grab from the paintbox. It’s a wink at Tudor’s yellow Tiger chronographs from the 1990s, and the layout itself, a 45-minute counter with a date window at 6, traces all the way back to the 1970 Oysterdate, Tudor’s very first chronograph.

The black tachymeter bezel and black-outlined snowflake hands crank up the contrast, with little hits of red (the chrono hand tip, the 200m depth text) rounding things out. Tudor even trimmed the snowflake hour hand so it stops crowding the subdials, and reworked the pusher knurling, a nod to its second-gen chronographs.

Is yellow for everyone? Absolutely not. But that’s the whole idea behind Tudor’s Daring collection, the same playground that gave us Pink and Flamingo Blue.
