By now, we’ve seen our fair share of watch collabs. Oftentimes, a retailer or customization firm will take a watchmaker’s popular model and give it a splash of their own chosen color (with a co-branded dial, of course). However, what’s impressed us about most of the joint efforts between Timex and The James Brand is just how well-justified they’ve been.
Back in 2021, the minimalist EDC brand helped bring titanium to Timex’s watch range for the first time in the modern age with a beautiful black-dial version of the Expedition North field watch. Other collaborations have included an affordable analog-digital version of the Ironman sports watch and an uber-colorful digital Ironman as well. And then there was the Timex x The James Brand Automatic GMT, which was a brand-new model wrapped in titanium with a true GMT function and a fair price tag — hence why it sold out instantly. Today, both companies have come back with a new, arguably more attractive version of that watch.
Timex x The James Brand Automatic GMT Emerald Edition Basics
Specs-wise, the Emerald Edition of the Automatic GMT is identical to the previous version. Inside of the 41mm titanium case is the same Miyota 9075 automatic GMT movement, as exhibited through the window caseback. This is a true GMT watch, meaning that not only can you have two time zones displayed on the center handset but you can adjust the hour hand independently of the minute hand so you don’t lose any accuracy when traveling. For a third time zone, the 24-hour scale is placed on both the rotating bezel and the chapter ring around the dial.
Other features of the timepiece are 200m of water resistance, a 3 o’clock date window, Super-LumiNova coating on the hands and indices, anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal, and a matching titanium bracelet with a quick-release spring bar for swapping in the perforated resin strap.
There’s also some co-branding on the dial, with the TJB logo on the bottom. It’s also etched in black over the exhibition caseback.
So Then What’s New?
For those wondering, the new emerald green colorway is the only real change from the one that came out back in May. It’s inspired by the Atlantic coastline and the forests of Nova Scotia, bringing a level of inspiration to this travel watch.
It might not sound like it’s that big of a deal but this actually makes this edition more desirable than the black dial version. As cool as the original Timex x TJB Automatic GMT was, it was a little too modern, with decidedly jarring lime green accents on the bezel pip, GMT hand, and crown. It took a sleek, accessible watch and made it a styling nightmare.
On the Emerald Edition, the lime green is relegated only to the pip on the chapter ring. Meanwhile, the bezel pip is now white and the GMT hand is outlined in black to match the other two hands. As for the crown, it’s given the emerald green color instead to match the dial and bezel. If the original felt too contemporary, the Emerald Edition flirts with vintage.
