TAG Heuer Gives a Well-Deserved Update to the Aquaracer Professional 300

TAG Heuer has been on a tear lately with its string of releases, including a titanium version of the Monaco Skeleton Chronograph and revivals of the DATO 45 from 1968 and its entry-level Formula 1 models from the ‘80s. Now, the Swiss icon is back with updates of two of its Aquaracer Professional 300 watches, in both Date and GMT iterations.

Due for an Update

Admittedly, the first models that come to most people’s minds when they think about TAG Heuer are the Monaco or Carrera chronographs. Amidst a crowded market, the brand’s flagship diver line isn’t exactly the brand’s flagship watch. Nonetheless, the Aquaracer has garnered its fair share of fans, and those fans deserve some attention too.

They haven’t been completely neglected, however, with several options including the Aquaracer Professional 1000 and the Aquaracer Solargraph 200, the latter of which debuted a couple of years ago and have been quite popular. Yet the Professional 300 (for 300m of water resistance), which debuted back in 2004, hasn’t gotten a deserving update in quite some time.

So, What’s Changed?

While both of the new Aquaracer Professional 300 models retain the same design language from the previous iterations, the overall look does feel a bit more luxurious, if not sleeker. For one, there’s now rhodium plating on the hands and indices with the former changing ever so slightly for a cooler look. They’re surrounded by the same twelve-sided bezel as the previous Aquaracers.

And then there’s the dial. If you know the Aquaracer, you’ll know the horizontal lines across the dial. This time, however, those lines get a distinct wave thanks to a 3D lacquering process. Honestly, these aim to challenge the like-minded waves on the Omega Seamaster and might actually give them a run for their money.

Available in blue, green, and black (Date model only), these dials come paired with either a matching rubber strap or a stainless steel bracelet. Moreover, the GMT models each come surrounded by a matching bi-colored bezel (blue-and-black or green-and-black).

Aside from the aesthetic, there are some other welcomed changes in tow as well. Notably, the size has been reduced from 43mm to more moderate 42mm with a compact 48mm lug-to-lug (down from 50mm). The thickness on the Date model is a mere 12mm while the GMT version goes up to 13.45mm.

And the Movements?

Previous Aquaracers have been powered by the ETA-based Caliber 5 but both of the new watches tick by with a COSC-certified manufacture Caliber TH31 automatic movement with 80 hours of power reserve (more than twice of the outgoing caliber). The only difference with the GMT is that the chronometer has been modified to handle a fourth GMT hand for tracking a second time zone.
