Known for putting a spin on popular microbrand models from the likes of Singer, Nivada Grenchen, and others, Perpétuel has arguably approached its most ambitious piece yet with a new take on the Jumping Hour from SpaceOne. The watch features the company’s signature Hindu-Arabic numerals and teal green colorway.
SpaceOne’s Brief History
Before “jumping” into the watch itself, let’s take a look at SpaceOne. A venture between independent watchmaker Théo Auffret and Guillaume Laidet, who was responsible for reviving Nivada Grenchen and Vulcain, the company launched on Kickstarter in early 2023 as Argon. Their debut model, the Spaceone was a futuristic-looking timepiece with a rare jumping hour complication. While it got funded within minutes, the brand was faced with legal backlash and forced to change its name.
Now operating under SpaceOne, the brand doubled down on the space theme for its second model, the Tellurium, which came out back in April. Now, it’s joined forces with Perpétuel on a beautiful new rendition of its Jumping Hour, which you can see above.
SpaceOne x Perpétuel Jumping Hour Basics
The new Perpétuel limited-edition SpaceOne Jumping Hour sports a teal-colored grade 5 titanium case that’s incredibly sleek and looks like something an invading alien species might be wearing on their wrists (although, this model is limited to just 25 pieces, so they’d better act fast!). There are also some stainless steel and forged carbon components in the case construction.
Like previous versions, the watch features a 51.67mm x 42mm case housing a Soprod P024 automatic movement that’s visible through the caseback. The watch is also paired with a DELUGS rubber strap.
The Jumping Hour
A function that consists of the hour hand or indicator jumping to the next hour marker as soon as the minute hand hits 60, the jumping hour comes to form in the SpaceOne as a pair of discs that rotate adjacent to one another, with the minute and hour appearing through a window. For the Perpétuel edition, these numerals are shown as orange Eastern Arabic digits.
First popping up in the mid-19th century, the jumping hour complication isn’t common in today’s horology industry but can be seen in high-end luxury watches.
