Forged carbon has gradually become one of the most renowned materials across every circle. From jewelry and horology to cars and cutlery, it’s become quite the commodity. Harping on the prior, Shinola is looking to get in on the action. The Michigan-bred manufacturer is paying tribute to their neighbor state of Minnesota and its Black Beach for the sake of their Forged Carbon Monster Automatic Dive Watch, and they claim it’s their strongest and most technologically-advanced diver to date — to no surprise.
Forged carbon is known for its highly-applicable versatility and great sense of durability, all the while remaining surprisingly lightweight. Shinola uses this coveted material to its advantage, crafting the bolstered Monster’s 45mm case out of the material by applying heat and pressure to a combination of carbon fiber shards and resin. The formidable timepiece runs on a Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement and is an ISO-6425-spec diver with 300m water resistance. As far as the dial is concerned, its polished gunmetal finish is accentuated by Super-LumiNova-infilled hands and applied indices, while the watch’s fully-marked dive bezel is executed in the same black and orange forged carbon as the case. Equipped with both a black rubber strap or leather-backed orange nylon strap, The orange accenting — which also shows up on the leather-backed nylon strap — evokes the rust-orange cliffs that surround Black Beach. As an added tribute to Minnesota’s enriching history, the etched case back highlights the Great Lakes.
