Ten years ago, filmmaker James Cameron made a record-breaking solo dive of nearly 11,000m to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. To aid him on his journey, Rolex sent along an experimental version of the Sea-Dweller Deepsea that was capable of handling the depths of the journey.
Now, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the mission, Rolex has chosen to unveil its first-ever all-titanium case, dubbed the Deepsea Challenge, which is a bulked-up version of the Oyster Perpetual. Used previously as a material for casebacks, the brand’s proprietary RLX Titanium is built upon grade 5 titanium for its lightness and resistance to corrosion. Moreover, the new watch is 30% lighter than the 2012 stainless steel watch that inspired it.
At a massive 50mm, the titanium case is waterproof up to 11,000m and sports a bi-color, unidirectional Cerachrom ceramic bezel that’s scratch-proof and coated in platinum. The black dial with white Chromalight markers is made for ultimate visibility in darkness and underwater conditions. Rolex has also swapped in the super-reliable and durable caliber 3230 automatic movement that was introduced in 2020.
Priced at $26,000, the Deepsea Challenge in RLX Titanium is expected to roll out soon from Rolex.
