Leveraging its indelible design language better than arguably any 21st-century watchmaker, Ressence has made a name for itself in just 15 years by designing functional avant-garde mechanical watches that actually serve a purpose. The boutique brand has transcended the idea past mere works of art that typical unconventional timepieces may offer to craft products that have utility while also managing to look intriguing.
From its design headquarters in Belgium to its Swiss construction, Ressence now unveils the Type 7, adding a GMT function to its panoply of watches for the first time ever. And luckily, it doesn’t stray too far from its companions.

Another New Model Already
It’s only been a few months since Ressence last came out with a new watch, the Type 9. But before that, it had been a couple of years. The Type 7 is an impressive feat because it shows the watch world how faithful the brand can stay to its distinct look while also adding plenty more function — this is something the best watchmakers do; you look at the Type 7 and say, “There goes another Ressence!”

Not Your Average GMT
Leveraging the brand’s patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) module, a modified ETA automatic movement that allows for the unique display involving the minute hand which rotates on the same plane as the rest of the subdials. Here, the GMT display is given its own subdial.
Like previous Ressence models, the Type 7 features a domed dial filled with oil to help you view the time from any angle. Due to the lack of a traditional crown, Ressence watches favor ambidextrous wear and ergonomic comfort. Instead, the watches are wound and set by turning their caseback — and the Type 7 is no different.
However, the addition of the GMT creates a new problem to be solved. And in order to set the second hour hand, you turn the center of the caseback clockwise instead of counterclockwise, allowing the GMT hand to jump backwards.

Some Other Notable Firsts
Housed in a 41mm grade 5 titanium case, the Type 7 doesn’t look dissimilar to other Ressence watches. However, fans of the brand will notice a fixed bezel that serves as a minute track on the outside of the sapphire crystal to coincide with the large hand rotating around the watch face.
With a layout most similar to the Type 5, Ressence has put a running seconds subdial at the top, while the hours get their own subdial with an 11-color indicator inside that measures the temperature of the oil. These, of course, go along with the 24-hour GMT subdial.
If we haven’t buried the lede enough already, we should probably start talking about the brand’s first-ever integrated bracelet, which also happens to be their first titanium bracelet, equipped here with a deployment clasp. The addition gives Ressence the first truly sporty timepiece in their catalog. Adding to that sportiness are the two dial color options: Night Blue and Aquamarine. Also, there are leather and rubber strap options available with the watch as well.
