In 1961, Mido released the Powerwind 1000 as part of its fairly-new Ocean Star lineup. Known as the “Rainbow Diver” by collectors, the timepiece could go 300m underwater, sported a colorful decompression dial, and was very popular during the heyday of recreational diving. However, it only lasted until 1965 and, as such, original versions of the watch are highly sought-after.
Back in 2020, Mido revived the Ocean Star watch, changing the name to the Decompression Worldtimer and only making 1,961 pieces, which all sold out right away. Now, the Swiss watchmaker has brought it back for another go-round, this time with the addition of a GMT function and sans limited-edition.
One of the busiest dials you’ll ever lay eyes on, the new Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer features the same 40.5mm stainless steel case and four-ring decompression timer — albeit using two different color schemes. The black-bezel version utilizes red, orange, and yellow rings, while the blue-bezel version revives the same blue-pink-green-yellow pattern as the black issue from 2020. On the outside of those rings is the 24-hour GMT ring with a red accompanying hand.
Each variant comes with both a matching rubber strap and stainless steel bracelet. The Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer can be purchased starting March 15 from Mido’s website or select retailers, priced at a modest CHF1,270 (~$1,357).
