When it comes to military associations in the watch world, few brands come to mind quicker than Luminox. Just celebrating its 35th anniversary last year, the brand was nearly brand new when it caught the attention of the United States Navy SEALs. The combination of accuracy, nighttime visibility, and diving capability allowed it to soar past the older, more seasoned brands at the time. Well, Luminox is now as seasoned as ever and is still making some of the toughest timepieces in existence. Now, reimagines the original Navy SEAL watch, the Swiss watchmaker has come out with the brand-new Navy SEAL 4230 Series, but with a material you probably didn’t see coming.

Informed by its past but ready for the present, the 4230 Series Navy SEAL watch eschews the brand’s iconic CARBONOX carbon composite case material in favor of 316L stainless steel that’s been black IP plated. But while even the brand’s steel-cased watches feature CARBONOX bezels, this one uses the metal for the bezel as well. A bit heavier than your average Luminox, the 4230 makes up for this with undeniable strength and is still rated at 200m of water resistance. Steel is also used for the caseback, which features an intricate new design with an engraved American eagle, a Naval anchor, and the Luminox logo. Measured at 45mm in diameter, each watch comes with a matching black rubber strap and a black-on-black Velcro strap.

Dial-side, the 4230 comes with a cool new textured dial that delivers a tactical appeal and completes the all-black aesthetic to pair with the case and bezel. Red accents are found on the 24-hour inner dial, the calendar aperture surround, and the second hand tip. Honoring the legacy of its long-time partner, the dial also features the Navy SEALs inscription at the bottom. Powered by the Swiss-made RONDA 715 LI quartz movement, the watch sports a time-date display with a 60-minute bezel scale. Lastly, no conversation about a Luminox watch would be concluded without talking about the dial lume, which delivers the signature Luminox Light Technology (LLT). Unlike other watches with a glowing lume that will fade by the end of the night, LLT is meant to last up to 25 years without fading.
