Hamilton’s Everyday Khaki Field King Gets a Cleaner Dial & 100m Water Resistance

Hamilton’s Khaki Field might be the most iconic field watch in existence. Supplying the U.S. Military with the wristwatch through two World Wars and the Vietnam War, the paradigmatic timepiece wasn’t available for civilian purchase until the 1980s, but has kept its legacy alive ever since.

As much as we love and admire the Khaki Field here at HICONSUMPTION, we do acknowledge that it might not be the best watch for everyday wear. Thankfully, Hamilton thought so too, debuting its Khaki Field King over 20 years ago as a perfect GADA alternative. Now, that watch is getting an even more accessible update.

A Long Time Coming

The Khaki Field King has been around long enough to earn a following among folks who wanted a little more refinement out of the standard Field formula: a day-date complication, a slightly dressier case finish, and a bit more personality. But the King always carried one piece of baggage in its 24-hour military time track. And while we have zero complaints about Hamilton leaning into its heritage, layering mil-spec details onto what’s supposed to be your versatile everyday watch does create some tension. This new release resolves that issue.

What Actually Changed (And What Didn’t)

Strip away that 24-hour track, and the dial opens up considerably. Gone too are the outer numerals on the 60-second scale, though the Super-LumiNova plots at five-minute intervals remain. What you’re left with is a cleaner, flatter surface — sunburst-brushed on the blue and green variants, matte on the black — with the day-date aperture sitting prominently at noon against a white background. The syringe hour and minute hands are unchanged, and the arrow-tipped seconds hand is still here because they work well.

Water resistance has been bumped from 50m to 100m, which required a modest case thickness increase to 11.85mm. It’s a small trade-off that earns you a meaningfully more versatile watch. However, the 40mm stainless steel case, the concave crown guards, and the sapphire display caseback all carry over. Under the hood, the H-40 caliber, which is Hamilton’s take on the Swatch Group’s Powermatic 80, is still in place, ticking at 21,600vph with that same impressive 80-hour power reserve.

Three Colors, Two Ways to Wear It

The Khaki Field King launches in black, blue, and green, each available on either a brown leather strap with white contrast stitching or a three-row brushed steel bracelet. The leather is a solid option, but the bracelet suits the watch better in our opinion. Also, the bracelet now features quick-release spring bars and micro-adjustment holes on the folding clasp for easier swapping and fine-tuning.

Recap

Hamilton Khaki Field King Auto Day-Date

Hamilton’s new Khaki Field King strips away the military time track and cleans up the dial considerably, making it a far more versatile everyday wear option than its predecessor. It’s the same proven 40mm package with a better water resistance rating and a sharper bracelet, just without as much mil-spec aesthetic.
