We’ve seen a lot of watches in recent years that incorporate recycled materials into their bands and even, sometimes, their cases. However, more often than not, this dedication towards helping Mother Earth has been at the expense of overall aesthetic — though we must still commend them for trying — and is hardly ever incorporated into the case itself. On the other hand, you have G-SHOCK, a company that’s been making cool and funky timepieces now for over four decades and knows how to do something unusual in a stylish way. In celebration of its 41st birthday, the Japanese watch icon has created a multi-colored version of its 5600 model, which uses old, discarded watches to help make its band and case just in time for Earth Day.
To execute this latest release, G-SHOCK has taken resin scraps from Casio-made watches (G-SHOCK’s parent company) in red, yellow, and black colorways. From there, the scraps have been finely shredded and mixed into a non-recycled resin base that have together been molded to make the bracelet and bezel of the new watch, model G-5600BG-1. Being that the nature of these watches surrounds the blending of random old watches with new resin material to create the multi-colored look, each example of the G-5600BG-1 will look slightly different than the next.
Furthering G-SHOCK’s conservationist initiative, the new material methods have been implemented into the brand’s Tough Solar-equipped models, which use any light source, both artificial or natural, to power the digital watch battery. With a 42.8mm x 48.9mm case, the 5600 was the brand’s original model back in 1983, and this is the most up-to-date version, featuring 200m of water resistance, resistance to shock, a full LED display, five alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, a calendar, and a world time display.
Available in an unspecified limited edition, the G-5600BG-1 is currently available from G-SHOCK’s website for $150.
