G-SHOCKs are not only a favorite in the watch community for their timeless design language and indestructible builds. One of our favorite selling points of the timepieces from the Casio sublabel is their unbelievable affordability. For its first watch in 1983, the Japanese brand launched the 5000 series, which continues to be one of their most popular models. And while you can acquire these square-shaped pieces for well under $200, the latest addition to the collection will be closing in on the world of luxury watches with a $3,100 price tag.
It would be concerning if you weren’t at least curious as to why the latest model, MRG-B5000R-1, is so much more expensive than the base 5000 watch. Well for starters, the B5000 models are typically this expensive. They debuted in 2022 as the first square model to feature a multi-piece bezel for improved shock resistance. The series is part of the MR-G collection, a lineup of high-end G-SHOCKs that use premium materials like titanium and stainless steel. For this new B5000R, the case not only uses DLC-coated titanium but is bolstered with a bezel made of the brand’s proprietary COBARION material, an alloy known for being four times harder than regular titanium and with a brightness that’s similar to platinum. Around the dial display is a brick pattern that pays homage to one of the first G-SHOCKs in 1983, as does the black and gold colorway.
While this isn’t the first use of COBARION, this is the first time any MRG-B5000 is adorned with a Dura Soft fluoro rubber band, which is known for its toughness, in part thanks to the insert-molding of titanium components. In all, this model is 11g lighter than the standard titanium version. Aside from materials and overall aesthetic, the watch runs on Tough Solar power and features Multi-Band 6 auto radio time adjustment and Bluetooth smartphone linking.
