WhistlePig’s 9th Annual Boss Hog Rye Whiskey Is Finished in Greek Fig Nectar Barrels

It’s that time of year again when rye whiskey favorite WhistlePig unveils its annual Boss Hog release. Now nine expressions in, the Vermont-based distillery is following up last year’s Lapulapu’s Pacific, a Filipino rum-finished whiskey, which itself concluded a two-part series that began with the 17-year-old Magellan’s Atlantic from the year before.

WhistlePig has never shied away from thinking outside the box with its releases, and the Boss Hog series is perhaps the most emblematic of the brand’s tenets. Boss Hog IX: Siren’s Song is the result of single-barrel rye whiskey getting secondary and tertiary finishes in casks that previously held Greek fig nectar and farm-scratch tentura — a Greek liqueur that typically consists of rum or brandy that’s been infused with herbs and spices.

Crafted by Liz Rhoades and Meghan Ireland, Siren’s Song is bottled at cask strength between 102.5 and 106.2 proof, with each bottle topped with a bespoke pewter mold depicting one of nine Greek muses who, according to Greek mythology, birthed the enchanting sirens. This 9th edition of the Boss Hog is said to possess a profile of cinnamon, clove, black cherry, and rye spice.
