AR glasses aren’t hard to come by these days, but Xiaomi’s latest reveal is a far cry from the countless off-brand options you’ll find on Amazon. Not only do the tech brand’s Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition supposedly boast an industry-leading 58 PPD (pixels-per-degree) resolution, they don’t look too ridiculous when you’re wearing them.
Regarding our point about the PPD rate, though, Xiaomi claims that these glasses deliver Retina-level quality, serving as a “seamless crossover between virtual and real worlds.” And as problematic as that could be, it’s hard to argue against how innovative the thought is. Tech-wise, a pair of micro-OLED panels with 1,200 nits sit behind electrochromic lenses; in other words, the latter promotes a more immersive experience that can either block ambient light or let it through, allowing you to break the barrier between what’s there and what isn’t — think of it as transparency mode on a pair of headphones.
Xiaomi’s presentation showcased several features that the glasses have to offer, with one of the most incredible being pulling images directly from your television to the display with the wave of a hand. Compositionally, the Snapdragon-powered AR Glass Discovery Edition is constructed of magnesium-lithium alloy and carbon fiber materials, giving it a sleek, futuristic look that isn’t hilariously clunky.
