Leica Shrinks Its Home Cinema Down to a 4K Projector You Can Point Anywhere

Say “Leica” and most people picture a rangefinder camera that costs more than a used car complete with that iconic little red dot. But, fewer know the company has been building projectors since 1926, back when “home cinema” wasn’t a phrase anyone even used.

The new Cine Compact 1 is the smallest, most movable chapter in that story, and it wants to follow you around the house.

A Century of Throwing Light

Unsurprisingly, Leica’s recent projectors have been pricey, design-forward pieces meant to stay put in your room. The wall-hugging Cine 1 and the Cine Play that followed were both built to sit still and look good doing it.

The Compact 1 keeps that same upscale look but finally shrinks it into something you can pick up and move wherever you want.

The Bauhaus-inspired shell is a one-piece block of aluminum with a glass front complete with Summicron zoom lens staring back at you. At 9.7 pounds it’s “compact” more in spirit than in actual heft, and realistically, it’s still not something we’d classify as ultra lightweight.

Point It At Anything

The real party trick is the 360-degree rotation system. Point it at a wall, swing it up at the ceiling, or aim it at the side of the house come sunset. Autofocus, auto keystone, and auto framing handle all of the behind-the-scenes work, so there’s no squinting and nudging to get the picture square.

On the picture front, a triple RGB laser feeds a 4K image up to 220 inches, with Dolby Vision and Leica’s own image processing riding shotgun. Brightness tops out at 1,700 lumens, plenty for a dark room and merely okay once the lights creep in.
