Retro gaming has been a historically niche subculture of the industry, with a dedicated fanbase of gamers who value tight gameplay, old-school art, and classic games above all else. The video game hardware company Analogue is an undisputable legend in the space, and it’s clear the team is full of retro gaming fans. Since 2011, the company has been crafting devices and gadgets that boast as much utility as they do design prowess, and with the release of the Analogue Pocket in 2019, the label’s efforts culminated in the ultimate handheld. Back in the ‘90s, transparent consoles and controllers were about as ubiquitous as Pokémon, and to capture that nostalgic look, Analogue announced the Analogue Pocket: Transparent Limited Editions, with seven colorful (and transparent) versions of the original handheld.
This nifty handheld can run a whopping 2,780+ Game Boy, Game Boy Color & Game Boy Advance game cartridges, and comes equipped with a built-in synth so you can recreate classic video game soundtracks or make your own. It has a 3.5-inch backlit LTPS LCD, ~8 hours of battery life, and is even capable of 18W fast charging (via USB-C). Cartridge adapters for additional games from consoles like the Sega Game Gear and Atari Lynx are also ready to go with the Analogue Pocket.
As for the colors available at launch, you can choose between Clear, Smoke, Red, Blue, Orange, Green, and Purple (all of which will be transparent). And just last year, the Analogue Pocket received a Red Dot Design Award, cementing the device’s status as one of the best handhelds in the game. Much like the other Analogue drops, expect these to sell out quickly and plan accordingly if you’re interested.
The Analogue Pocket: Transparent Limited Editions in all seven colors will be available September 29th for $250. They drop at 8 a.m. PDT, and shipping is expected to take two weeks.
