Analogue’s Viral N64 Console Gets the Y2K Treatment with Translucent Colorways

Playing the Nintendo 64 today on a high-def TV won’t give you the same experience it did on your old CRT in the ’90s. Grainy resolution becomes more exposed, thus affecting the user experience. Modern-day emulators are great but haven’t given you 100% compatibility with your old games — that is, before Analogue launched its 3D console last year.

If you were one of the lucky ones able to get the 4K-quality console in its original black or white colorway earlier this year, then you might be remiss that you didn’t wait a bit longer. Not only are those colors coming back for a restock but you may have even liked one of the new Y2K-inspired transparent variants that are getting ready to drop this week.

Throwback Hardware

When Nintendo rolled out the Funtastic series in the early 2000s, it was peak ’90s design philosophy. Why hide the electronics when you can show them off? Now Analogue’s bringing that aesthetic back with eight limited edition colorways for the 3D, each perfectly color-matched to the originals after over a year of development.

The lineup reads like pure nostalgia: Jungle (transparent green), Ice (transparent teal), Watermelon (transparent pink), Fire (transparent orange), Grape (transparent purple), Clear (transparent), Smoke (transparent black), and a solid Gold edition that mirrors the rare Toys “R” Us exclusive. Missing from the roster is the Pikachu edition, presumably to avoid any unwanted attention from Nintendo’s legal team.

Same Performance, Better Packaging

Each Funtastic edition houses the same FPGA-powered hardware that’s earned praise across the board since launch, with zero input lag, 4K output with authentic CRT display modes, and actual 100% compatibility with your entire N64 library. After four years of circuit-level engineering, Analogue nailed something software emulation never could with perfect accuracy.

Like the original, the 3D will feature four controller ports but will also have a pair of USB ports, a port for your SD card, and Bluetooth support. While it won’t come with its own controller, the unit is compatible with your old N64 controllers or even third-party options such as the superb one that 8bitdo’s put out to match the new colorways, though those won’t ship until February 2026.
