Brazilian beach culture has perfected the flip-flop over decades, with Havaianas becoming the gold standard of effortless simplicity. But throw 3D-printing firm Zellerfeld into the mix, and suddenly we’re talking about a complete revision of what the humble flip-flop can be.

The brands have recently collaborated on the Top Toe flip-flop, which is Havaianas’ first venture into 3D-printed territory, and it’s about as far from their traditional flat-soled approach as you can get. Where classic Havaianas are as essential as slip-ons can get, this collaboration with Zellerfeld introduces a sculptural, almost architectural approach to beach footwear.

Bridging Heritage and Innovation

If you’ve been paying attention for the past couple of years, you’ll recognize the name Zellerfeld, the German 3D-printing maveraick who’s built its reputation on partnerships that push boundaries — from Nike’s Air Max 1000 to luxury collaborations with Louis Vuitton.

Their approach works around manufacturing constraints, allowing for designs that would be impossible through conventional molding processes. The Top Toe conveys this philosophy perfectly, keeping Havaianas’ signature Y-strap but with elements that standard flip-flop production can’t achieve.

The most striking difference you’ll notice is the rounded toe cap that wraps over the front, fundamentally changing how the flip-flop interacts with your foot through both improved structure and protection. The 3D-printing creates a seamless bond between the toe cap and footbed for a more secure fit as well.

3D-Printed Performance

Zellerfeld’s signature lattice construction runs throughout the footbed, creating a textured surface designed to prevent slipping — a common complaint with smooth flip-flop soles. The curved footbed follows natural foot contours rather than the flat profile of traditional designs, rising at the heel and sides for enhanced support.

The zellerFOAM material (Zellerfeld’s proprietary TPU blend) brings practical benefits beyond the manufacturing novelty. It’s fully recyclable, machine washable, and odor-resistant. The custom-fitted approach, based on foot scans, eliminates the sizing guesswork that often leaves flip-flop wearers with less-than-ideal fits.
