When it comes to performance eyewear, Oakley is likely the first name that comes to mind. Launched in 1975 in part due to its founder’s love of motocross, the sunglasses brand quickly evolved, continuing to be at the forefront of the sunglasses industry in terms of style and technology. However, with its latest release, Oakley is looking back to a very, very important model in its catalog.

Brief History of the Eyeshade
Oakley debuted the Eyeshade in 1984, which became the first-ever performance eyewear designed specifically for sports. Dubbed the Factory Pilot Oakley Eyeshade, this model has been worn by legendary athletes like cyclist Greg LeMond during his 1986 Tour de France victory and countless extreme sports Olympians in ‘84, putting these shades on a large stage early on.
And while the Eyeshade has been reissued and revived a few times over the years, including a 2014 version as part of Oakley’s Heritage Collection. However, in the past decade or so, the Eyeshade has only really had limited-edition drops but nothing more.
For its 50th-anniversary celebration this year, the company has decided to release the shades once more as part of its MUZM (pronounced “museum”) line, where it looks back at its history for inspiration.

The 2025 MUZM Eyeshade
Available in two stylish limited-edition variants — white frames with Prizm Road lenses for sunny days and Cool Grey lenses with Prizm Low-Light lenses for cloudy days — the MUZM release is pretty faithful to the original Eyeshade, albeit with some modern improvements on the technical side.
The aforementioned lens delineation notwithstanding, the shades also utilize Oakley’s O Matter frame tech, which took Oakley’s single lens shield design and optimized it for optical clarity, aerodynamics, and durability within a very lightweight housing.
To keep the sunglasses on your face for any activity, the nosepads are made from a comfortable and grippy Unobtanium material. Featuring retro-inspired “Factory Pilot” branding on the sides, the stems are adjustable for a perfect fit.
