While it’s become a legendary name in several categories of footwear, and even clothing, Nike originally rose to power in the 1970s with its forward-thinking running shoes. Innovating with its waffle soles and its distinct design aesthetic, the brand then doubled-down in the ‘80s with the debut of its Pegasus series, bringing an everyman running shoe to an increasingly specialized market. However, these days, Nike has something for everyone. A viable shoe for both road racing and gym running, and honestly everything in the between, the Rival Fly 4 is an affordable option that delivers the comfort and promise of the Swoosh.

Currently available in four colorways, the Rival Fly 4 updates this modern-era runner with a forefoot Air Zoom unit that gives you responsive toe-off and consistent pop, while also providing excellent cushioning and comfort. Likewise, the Cushion 3.0 midsole foam is even softer than the 3rd-gen Rival Fly, yet adds to that responsiveness of the Air Zoom. Helping achieve a lightweight design, the low-profile build gives you extra mobility for changing direction and technical runs. Meanwhile, the strong midfoot plastic piece aids with transitions, giving you more responsiveness over the previous model.

We also love the design on the Rival Fly 4, featuring a breathable mesh upper with horizontal grooves and an upward-curved sole that seems to complement the large Swoosh logo on the side. Weighing just around 9.1oz, the sneaker also has a heel-to-toe drop of 8mm for optimal propulsion. The tongue is inspired by those on racing shoes, but with extra padding and perforations for comfort and breathability.

Again, a big benefit of the Rival Fly 4 is the fair pricing. At $100, however, you’ll feel like you’re getting a running shoe nearly double the price. Head over to Nike’s website to get your own.
